Hand / Shifter

I just read from some one in "Foot / Clutch" thread saying that if you rest your hand on your shifter while driving, it will damage your gear box. Just like if you rest your foot on clutch, it will damage your car too.

Is it true??!! Damn! I leave my hand on the shifter 75% of the time... Is my gear box doomed?!?! OMFG...

If the transmission needed the weight and force applied to it the car would have a weight built into the lever. No, you shouldn't rest your hand on the shift lever. The gears are meant to align with the lever "floating" in it's selected position, not pushed to a different position. That alters the wear pattern. Both hands should be on the wheel.

The stock knob is heavy because it actually helps (slightly) the driver throw it into gear. That being said, if you rest your hand on it you're applying force that's not needed, and over time will start to damage your synchros making it hard to get into gear, or impossible to get into gear.

I know, I have damaged synchros.

I rest my hands on the shifter all the time and never had a problem with it. I don't really put any weight on it though i just kind of use it as an arm rest along with the slide out part of the center console.

Because the system was designed around that knob weight so it functions properly with that knob.

Because the other 100 times I jumped off the roof and didn't break my leg is why I can jump off the roof again.

I think you should get rid of this habit. There's no need to be so forceful with these transmissions and I'm sure what you're doing can't be that healthy for it.

I shift into gears with almost a flick of the wrist. Very gentle movement is all it takes and I never keep pulling on it like you do...
