stop n go traffic, now car jerks into gear...tranny seems to have died?

Oh man, I swear to god I remember posting in a similar thread about how I didnt have this same problem, and just a couple of days later, it's affecting me.

I was in stop and go traffic today, and as normal, the car jerks from 7-9 MPH and thought nothing of it. After about 20 minutes of this I got off at a ramp, and the car jerked, then thunked into a higher gear.

I didn't think anything of it.

I stopped at a red light, then took off again and it shifted normal, but when I gas up, theres a quick jerk, then downshift, then it goes into gear. There's like a period of "neutral" between 2nd and 3rd now, and it's driving me crazy.

My old Galant had the same problem, and two months later the torque converter gave out.

I actually am in tears right now (32 years old, and I am literally crying), as I can't believe that the tranny has given out on me. I am going to take Tuesday off and take it to the dealer, but right now the jerk is so light, I am afraid they will brush me off.

I've never been to the dealer and got something fixed the first time, and I really fear that they will claim that I abused the car.

I know that I bitch and moan a lot about my car here, but I never had an engine issue with my car, and I totally love the car engine wise, but I only have 14500 miles on the car and am simply stunned. I don't know what to do, or even check.

If I simply wanted to give the car back to the dealer (and keep no vehicles) would this adversely affect my credit? How much would I have to pay? I don't think I want (any) car anymore.

well giving the car back will affect you. You can try to sell it out right for what you owe and come out even.

I don't know what else to do. I don't think this car is reliable at all. I don't even push the car at all. It's been babied this whole time. I think once I really gunned it to try and show off, and even then the wheels didn't even spin.

How can stop and go traffic damage a transmission like that? I am so bummed out. I cancelled all my plans for the long weekend over this.

I *know* it's the torque converter giving out. I know that feeling. Is there anything I can check? Can you even check the transmission fluid levels in this car?

Assuming you have the lx or ex civic, don't those car's transmissions have that learning capability? Maybe all that stop and go traffic affects it's ability when you go to stretch its legs.

calm down, at 14.5k miles the dealer should take care of it, there is nothing to worry about.

Mine has done this since day one! It is somrtimes hard for the civic's computer to decied between 1st or second, and thats what you feel shifting in between.

You could sell your civic for your payoff ammount (you would have to call your bank) and be done with it or you could have your dealer take a look at it......

Good luck

I have always been unease about the 7-9 mph jerk. It seems like such a jolt to transmission that I think will show it's wear and tear sooner or later. The other problem that I seem to have is when I'm starting off in first with a very low accelaration, it will jerk into second. Has anybody experienced this problem?

I've always had the 7-9 jerk also, and got quite accustomed to it. I am wondering if 20 minutes of jerking the car at that point has killed the transmission. I couldn't help it, but there was a lot of traffic.

What is happenning is that my transmission is slipping from 2nd to 3rd gear causing the jerk at the moment the transmission slips.

It's thudding into 3rd gear when I gun it.

It goes...
1st
2nd
*slip* (like it's nuetral for a brief moment.)
*thud -> 3rd gear

It feels as if there wasnt enough transmission fluid in the car, but I went under the car and haven't noticed any leaking at all. I don't know what to do.

Yes I think the conclusion is that the jerky and clunky automatic transmissions in the civic are very very annoying.

Like the rest of you guys, I wondor how long this tranny will last. The "clunks" as the computer tries to decide if it should be in 1st or 2nd gear cannot be good for the longevity of this tranny.

For this reason, I have already made up my mind that I will sell this car before the 3 year 36,000 mile warranty expires. I have no faith in the transmission in this car. How Honda even let this thing go to production is beyond me.

I love Honda and will probably buy another once I sell this one (an accord maybe) but only after I thoroughly test drive it and research it making sure it doesn't have similar transmission problems.
