Got AMSOIL tranny fluid put in today

I had real bad 3rd gear grinding/popping out several months ago so I got my dealer to replace the fluid with the new kind of Honda MTF. This helped tremendously however the problem returned about a month later. So, I went out and bought some AMSOIL tranny fluid and had the dealer put it in today. So far the transmission feels about the same as when I had the new Honda MTF put in, gears engage with much less force and only 4th gear is a little bit notchy. Will the AMSOIL last longer then the Honda fluid?

Also, if you remember my previous thread my CD player was dying. Last week it totally died and will not accept CD's at all. It eats them about half way and then spits them back out. I wanted to get it replaced at the dealer but they had to order the player from Honda so it will be another few days.

I've had my Amsoil MTF and even after 3 months, it still shifts like butter. There is still resistance going into third, but it's nothing that will bug me too much. I've never had it pop out of gear either. The only thing that really gets on my nerves is the second gear grind.

Hey guys,

Forgive my newb-ness, I've read a lot about the 3rd gear issue but just wanted to get something clarified... what does it mean to be "notchy" and what happens when a gear "pops out"?

I am new to stick shifting. I test drove a used 06 Si this past weekend and this one time I was shifting from 2nd -> 3rd, I felt some resistance but I put some force into it and thought it was in 3rd. I let out the clutch and gave it some gas and it rev'd without accelerating. I had to put it back into 2nd and re-shift.

Most likely this was my inexperience causing me to shift down into 1st but just wanted to understand the issue for when I test drive another Si.

Thanks

When we refer to third gear being notchy, it means there's resistance. It doesn't feel perfectly smooth going in. It feels like we are pushing it in gear, being stopped by something. Sort of like a lockout stopping us and we've got to use even more force to continue to push it in. It's almost as if it has two phases. I don't know if this is a good analogy, but picture yourself punching some very thick mud. You go through the air which has very little resistance and then you hit the mud. You've got to obviously put more force into it to get through the mud. If you engage the clutch too early while it is in its "first" phase, it will subsequently pop out after the clutch has been engaged. By popping out, you will think it would be in gear, but it's only partially in gear. After engaging the clutch, the transmission isn't make full contact with the gear and spits it back out in neutral.

Thanks for the explanation. Sounds like what I experienced with the used 06. I definitely felt resistance going into third and had to put some force into it yet it still didn't get in there.
