Creating an in gear indicator

My wife is new to driving STD. Anyone think of a way to wire up a set of lights that would indicate which gear the trans was in?
Thinking about a switch(contact) that would be tripped as you shifted into a gear wired to a series of lights mounted a panel with a number under each light to indicated the gear. I have not had a close look at the shifter handle to see if there is actually a way to rig it. Wondered if those who have done some work on the shifter might have seen a way to do it.
Thanks
Gerry

No disrespect but for a newbie it only takes about 20 minutes to learn the gears and where they are. If you can't remember what gear you're in after that you shouldn't be driving a stick

When I first started driving the Si, I accidently shifted into 5th a few times. I was used to my s13 and I dunno why I did that... 3rd is only straight up in neutral... Lol I felt like a total noob.. That shifter is pretty cool as hell

I'm trying to teach my 56 yr old wife and not destroy 31 years of a great marriage.

If I can't we'll have to trade.
