Steering Freeze
The other day I drove my civic normaly to work and parked it in the lot just like any normal day.
Around 8 to 10 hours later when I was about to drive home as I was coming out of the parking slot the steering wheel would not budge (engine running and warmed up). There were no indicators on in the dash and everytime I would try and force the steering wheel to turn I would see the eps light blink on and off but would not stay on. The manual indicated the the eps indicator would light up and stay lit should there be any problems with the ep system given that it did not stay on I tried a few resets (shutting the engine off removing the Key and replacing it and starting her up again) after an hour of just trying that (with the variable driving it a few feet forward and back while trying to turn the wheel) I gave up, parked it back and took a cab home. I called the dealer about it and they said to have the unit brought in for servicing, the next day getting into work I checked the car the first thing and sure enough it was the same, no change could not budge the steering wheel like the eps was turned off. After work i head to the parking lot with every intention to have it serviced where it was parked or have it towed in but then when i tried it again everything was normal as if nothing happened. Brought it to the dealer first thing and they ran diagnostics for 5 hours and came back to me and said they could'nt find anything. It scares me to think my steering might freeze up in the middle of the highway. Any input on this would be much appreciated. Thanks |

Was it froze or no power steering?
If no power steering as long as your moving it'll be easier to turn, like on the highway it'll be easy to steer w/o power steering. If it ever happens again i'd say try to make it to the dealer while it's happening. Just move a couple MPH so its easier to steer. If its froze, i dunno. Maybe the electric motor was working against you holding the wheel still. |

from what I can determine it was no powersteering at all. I asked the dealer to check the system and they found nothing. Im not familiar with the Electronic Power Steering system at all, other than the basaic hydrolic fluids that the conventional hyrdolic powersteering uses im useless with the elctronic one, not familiar with the symptoms or any troubleshooting. its been 3 days since and no re-occurance.
