mechanical engine sound

I have 12,000 mile on my Civic and have noticed a slight clicking sound in the passenger compartment when the engine idles or accelerates. I know the Civic has adjustable valve clearance. Is this sound just characertistic of the engine after it is broken in?I don't remember hearing this when the car was new.

I have the same problem. I hate it. When I got the car it was 100% silent. Now at idle i'm hearing ticking. This is after about 650miles.

Yeah I've started to notice this noise too. Not sure how long it's been there since I really haven't spent time outside of the car while it's running lately since it's been cold. I have almost 5000 miles on mine.

I (think) I've heard a similar sound. Almost a knocking sound? Mine only does it when I start it in the cold. After it warms up, I'm good to go. Maybe it's not the same sound...I dunno.

My coupe is doing the same at 13K miles, the car was very quiet when it was new. I wonder if it is the oil that makes the difference? may be it is valve resonance. My accord did that in winter more then summer, I think it’s the thin oil 5W20, I am going to try 5W30 synthetic oil next oil change…

Big difference, today I took may car for an oil change, and got SAE 5W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil. I no longer hear the engine's mechanical resonance, even when the car is fully warm and idling at about 600 RPM. Big Difference!!!

I believe this oil is made by Ford Motor Company....

Let see how long this holds up… i'll let you guys know...

Think you guy's might be due an oil change, my engine is still pretty silent at 12,000 miles.

SAE 5W-20 Full Synthetic Motor Oil is what i've always used in my 03 civic. it works really well, kept my car running 40K miles and then some. Its probally made by ford, but its not ford exactly.
