FG1 Differential

I know the FG2 comes with a Limited-Slip Differential, and the FG1 doesn't. I assume the FG1 has an open differential. I am wondering if it's possible to put in an aftermarket differential, like a Quaife or Torsen.

I'd assume the way to find a matching diff would be to find one that fits the housing. I tried finding some kind of code that identifies the housing for the diff on the web, but no luck. Best I found was it appears, from pics off a parts site, the same housing that holds the diff also contains the transmission.

Any ideas?

An open differential, I'd assume. Standard stuff.

I'd imagine a RWD diff would differ from a FWD diff, since the RWD diff is less cramped and is probably oriented differently due to the input shaft's orientation.. but the function is the same, distribute power to the wheels.

Yes, But you will have to open the transmission casing in order to install the limite slip gear. In other words you are better of buying a trans with limited slip than actually modifying one that does not have one.

A diff might run a grand, a diff + tranny, ouch I don't want to know how much.

I don't believe replacing the diff would be too much work. Hard part would be lowering & raising the housing, I'm sure she's heavy.

Alas, I can't do anything if I can't find a diff that will fit.

You are forgetting that there is alot of clearance measuring involved, have seen many lsd's go bad when people dont do the job right.

Well, if you truly wanted too; you can swap the FG2 lsd into your FG1 tranny, it's been done already actually. It works, but who knows what kind of problems might appear.

If you're not gonna do AutoX or circuit racing, don't waste your money on getting a LSD. Stick with open.
