Drove to NY- Odd smell

So I was driving to NYC the other day and just as I entered NJ, I felt a terrible odor that I can only describe as a rotten corps. I didn't think of it much, because I thought, hey, it's New Jersey. While I was driving around NYC I felt it a couple of times more, still thinking its a NYC- NJ issue. That night, on the way back I felt it again. That was about 100 miles away! I really think something got cought dead inside my car and I have no idea where to look. My AC or air was working at the times I felt the smell.

Right between ny/nj is a funky odor.
Ther are lots of plants around. When your a local you get used to it
However "tourists" aren't too fond of it.

Keep in mind

NJ = The armpit of America...... and now you know why.
also if you came through staten island (since i see your from Brooklyn)

Staten island has the WORLDS largest garbage dump.

The odor should have dissipated after 100 miles.
Check the carpet for dampness. Could be similar to an A/C related issue that I'm currently dealing with.

I am local, I lived in NYC for 13 years and pretty much used to Newark smells. But I tell you, this wasn't it. It smelled like something literally died and was disintegrating. BTW, SI dump is closed for years. That's why the real estate skyrocketed there. My parents still live there. Anyway, my biggest concern is why it still smelled after I was getting close to Albany. It is always fresh and nice over here. Reminds me the episode of Seinfeld with BO.
