Solutions to rear-right knocking sound and 3rd gear grind

To start off, idk if anyone else has actually made a topic for the solution to these two, but I am. I have an '07 NBP Si coupe and I am good friends with the Head Repairman at Honda City. He fixes Si's and s2k's all the time. Here's what the problems are from the factory and their solutions:

Rear-Passenger Side Knocking: The Shock is either leaking or faulty. The knocking sound can often be reproduced by moving the back of the car up and down(pushing on bumper or trunk but not too hard or ). The fix is to have Honda replace your rear-passenger side shock under warranty.

Third Gear Grind: HONDA HAS SENT OUT MANY CARS (MT) THAT HAVE HAD OVERFILLED TRANSMISSIONS. The way that happens is when the MT is filled with the Honda MT fluid, the tranny is on an angle, thus resulting in improper filling and it becomes overfilled. The Si has 2 synchros and one is coated with something, I believe the mechanic at my dealer told me something that started with an L... I don't remember it. Anyway, The Synchro needs to be replaced. An easy fix for this is to switch your MTF(Manual Transmission Fluid) to Amsoil, being that it will NOT void your warranty since it is like changing your own motor oil(My motor oil is Mobil 1 Fully Synthetic 5W-30). This will make shifting smoother and it lubricates better. If there is still a problem, then your Synchro will need to be replaced.

Good info! Question, is it best to change the transmission fluid when the car is new, or wait until the first service? I am buying a new Si soon and was wondering what to do!

Hey thanks for the info.. i have both of these problems but my shock knocking only happens once a week or so. Will this get worse over time? Is it dangerous at all?

I had the same exact problem and never took it in to the dealership. The clicking sound eventually went away. I think it's just the shocks seating in place with every other part in the suspension. There is something back there that needs to wear in properly. You can't have so many right rear shock problems out there. Aren't the left hand shocks identical to the right hand shocks?

I think it's only been a problem with the 6spd MT in the Si.

I had my passenger side rear shock replaced at 950 miles. I now have close to 8,000 and it has not returned.

The 3rd gear issue only happens to me occasionally and only the first time I engage 3rd gear. I can usually feel it happening so I shift real slow-like...When I take it in for an oil change I will change trans fluid too...Probably to Redline MTF.

Yo, I live on Long Island as well. The Head Repairman at Honda City is a guy names Charlie. He's the one who told me EXACTLY what was wrong and why it happened, so that when I went to Millenium Honda(where I bought my Si) I knew what to tell them, rather than have them figure it out and bs about it. Go to Honda City, ask for Charlie, and say "Dan from Tiger Schulmann's told me to go to you for the fix."

Millenium Honda won't change the MTF to anything but Honda, which sucks. So i'm changing it to Amsoil since it's the best. My R/R shock was replaced and there hasn't been a problem since.
