this is how most cars are. if you get this message it will take a couple of days for it to recognized that you solved the problem. this was part of a big issue with the cx7.

call me stupid but isn't that one of the forbidden things to do ?

u guys need to tighten ur gas caps more or you will get a cel for small evap leak detected. dealer will clear it for you one time for courtesy but if it happens again they will charge you 1 hour diag time for it. be careful. 3-4 clicks is recommended. i used to work at honda and loved it when ppl had that problem coz i could fix it in 5 min. and get 1 hour to do it! lol

I just got the "Check Fuel Cap" sign blinking. It hasn't gone away for 1/2 the day already. I press the "sel/res" button and it goes away until i start the car again. If it stays on for tmr also.. they i'll bring it in to see what the dealership can say about it.

My 06 EX sedan purchased May of 06 just did this today for the first time. Checked the cap and it seemed tight enough. Hit Select/Reset to clear it. Warning came back on next time I started the car. Came here and searched and found this thread.

Mine took 7-8 days of normal driving. Then it went away.

I started recieving this yesterday. Tank is about 90% full. I'm anal about filling, I never overfill it, and I always make sure the cap clicks 3 times.

Did the manual-recommended reset, still there when I turn the car on. Stupid POS. Another thing to add to the growing list of little annoyances with this car.

I resetted mines? what language is that? do you reset landmines?

I recently had the same thing; called the dealer, they acted like they had never heard about it before (assistant service manager) now I know how widespread it is. Mine reset itself after about a week.

It should go away on its on. It wont go away as soon as you tighten your cap. The ECU takes a coupe of days to recognized that it has been adjusted. Just like when you fuel up the message didn't come on immediately. If it doesn't go away just take it to the dealer.

Mine came on once shortly after I bought the car. I checked the cap it was loose. I tightened it and didn't even pay attention to how long the light was still on. I've never seen the light again. It's certainly no big deal.

Mine just popped up today but I think I have to bring this to ATTENTION.
The reason its coming up I think is because. When I checked it. I saw a hole and if I recall. aren't cars suppose to have a metal piece/hing that covers the hole. Then have the black gas cap?

If so, yea... I don't see that metal piece, its pretty obvious.
The gas cap I retightened but that hole bothers me... wouldn't gas just evaporate?

Can someone take a pic of their civic for me on the gas cap (with the CAP OFF).

I will take one, lets compare, I think its a bad design or defect. If there is a metal piece that suppose to be there... its missing and probably fell into the gas tank.

Oh and btw... I called Honda just now... the guy said there is a hole like all other civics... erp... plz take a pic someone it does not feel right. I look at it too and it looks like there is a spot for a small door to be there... If honda made it like this, then its so unreliable.

gas expands when it heats up, as does all things. If there was a flap there, on a reallllly hot day, your gas tank would pressurize, and explode.

There is a reason why gas tanks arent 100% sealed.

I agree with that and I know this; however, I don't recall missing a small door that closes the hole to prevent things to just drop in.
Think of security and things falling in...
The door doesn't have to be sealed, if it was sealed then how would gas go in

My integra has it, I am just wondering how come the civic may not according to the honda guy.
I will take a pic I think you don't understand where I am trying to get at.

I understand what you mean, but really, what falls into the gas tank?

Security issues can itemize down to such things:

Sugar, dust, particles, paper, cigarettes
Anything else you can think of that pertains to security, property violations.

Also, once again, I mention that I notice the side seems like it has a groove where hinges or a small cap could have been in place.

My 3 integras (88, 95, 99) all had them, and my dad's toyota camary too.
It would not make sense all of a sudden Honda didn't make em and this coicedinly happened.

I also recall someone mentioning it a few posts back also no this thread (now that I see it).

Thus, I am going into Honda to hassel because I can't believe this.

Do you have the problem or did?
Did you check yours and compared?

I am a brand new owner of a 2007 Civic (not yet a month old). My check fuel cap signal came on and I read that it meant the cap was not on securely, so I tightened it. It did not go away, so took it to the dealer - they said they cleared "something out" and it was okay. I filled up with gas four days ago and last night the check fuel cap signal came on again?? I checked and it seemed as if it had worked its way loose. I tightened it about six clicks, but not sure this will last. The signal is still on, so will wait to see if it clears after a few days. Have they had any notices from Honda on this?

Mine also came on the other day but it wasn't after I had gotten gas. Actually i was half way through the tank. So i took my ScangaugeII to see If is an actual code to clear and ScangaugeII said there weren't any. So I of course went to work, stopped turned off the car got out and took off the cap put it back on, (actually heard about three clicks ) got back in started the car and there it was. So went in to my office and got on here and took a look at everyone elses remedies. Decided that I would wait a couple of days to see if it went off . Got off of work drove about 17 miles got home, parked it. Later on that evening was getting in the car, turned the key and low and behold it had cleared.

My 'check fuel cap' message came on several times during the first 1,200 miles. Just this past weekend, it came on again and it would not go away even after I re-tightened the cap. Then, this afternoon, the MIL came on. I'm hoping it will go away. Sounds to me like this is a very common problem and Honda should address this soon.
