"Check Fuel Cap" WTF?!?

So every time I have gotten into my car the past two days. It has on occasion flashed "Check Fuel Cap". Every time i check the damn cap, it's fine. It's not loose or anything. What the hell is going on? Is this just a wiring problem or do others have this issue?

flaw in the system, its a known problem, and unfortunately all the dealer can do is reset it and hope it doesnt come back, theres no actual fix that i know of.

Do a search...

I got the message once and it wouldn't go away, so I disconnected the negative terminal from the battery for about 15-30 minutes, put it back, let it idle for 15 mins and all was well.

Its happened to me countless times, i guess its a good thing since i check the cap all the time now. It is a glitch unless it really isnt secured. If it keeps coming on for more than a week bring it to the dealer

Make sure everytime you click the gas cap three or four times.

Fuel Cap Warning.

The "check fuel cap" message came on this morning. It was not on ever before. Of course I checked it , and it was tight. I loosened it and re tightened it, hearing 4 or 5 clicks, and it still is giving me the warning. It's easy to get rid of the message temporarily by selecting a different display, but how can I get it to go away permanently ? It comes on every time I start the car now.

I assume the dealer will have to "reset" it, but wondered if anyone knew an easier way, and why it happened to begin with. FYI, the cap was NEVER loose to begin with, the warning just happened overnight with knowone even touching the gas cap.

Thanks in advance.

It just takes a few hours to reset. This has happened to several members. I'm not sure if it's a flaw in the system or an actual issue.

Sorry about the re-post Cam. It seems I try a search one time, and find nothing, then the next time I post something, it gets merged. Gettin' old I guess.

No problem man. It's my job as a mod to help out. There were several Fuel Cap threads, so I thought I'd help everyone with the problem and merge them so that all the info was together. If you did a search and found nothing, at least you tried.

I hope your question was answered. If not, let us know.

Well, it sort of was answered. It doesn't appear to have a definative answer as to why it happens though. The fix also appears to be temporary. I guess I will wait a day or two and see what happens. I need an oil change this week, so the dealer can re set it if it does not go off before that.

Was it low on gas? I've seen the message pop up twice thus far. First one was cleared immediately by disconnecting the negative terminal. The most recent (happened last Wednesday) cleared by itself today.

I get the same message then it turns to a CEL. Been happening ever since I put my Ingen CAI on. Even if I reset it by disconnecting the battery the check fuel cap warning will come back on after several miles the a CEL several miles after that.

must be something electricial since last night my nustart 4000 remote wouldn't work at all and i had to 'break in' (by having it go off full blast around my coworkers, how embarassing) and then resetting it to valet mode. now i have to have it off until i can call the shop.

now i can't reprogram the remote w/o it beeping constantly, saying that the door has been broken into.

fuel cap warning still on.

Angry Check Fuel Cap message

I filled up while the car was running and the message came on. After checking the cap (turn off car, open filler door, take off cap, inspect for dammage, replace cap turn a few clicks. close fuel door, restart car ) then I hit the reset button and it went away till I turned off the car and restarted the next day. It has been 4 days now and it still comes on every time I start the car. I was waiting till I refueled again (this time with the engine off) to see if that would clear it. I will post if it does reset it.
