Just wait for it to turn off on it's own. If you are determined to do so, an easy way to reset it would be to disconnect the battery. My friend had this same problem with his Accord coupe, it went away after a day.

cutting power to the comp for a min will reset it, easiest way is the battery, take off the negative cable for a min or 2, then reattach.

I have been waiting for over a week, and the message has not gone away. I filled my gas then close the cap more than 6 clicks and still didn't go away. I'll try the battery cable as some of you suggest it.
thanks

Hi, thanks for getting back to me. Sorry that I am a newbie with car. I look at the battery's negative cable (facing the front of the car point of view) which located on the left side, and I hesitated cuz I didn't know what to do. So I asked my coworker for idea, he said I should take off the positive cable *not the negative cuz that would ground it.... So I am getting back to you for confirmation and assistant. Thanks for your help.

I just had this same problem... I checked it and put back on the cap... Still the warning was on my dash... Kinda bugged me driving around so i pressed the reset button on my dash beside the brightness buttons and it clears it till you start your car again. Good news i woke up this morning and it wasn't there any more at all... So i guess it just needs a little time to reset.

It's happening to me too - but the seal (blue in color) on the inside rim of the fuel cap was torn and probably have to get a new cap. Don't know why it could rip so easily.

CHECK FUEL CAP

I have done a search and not much info comes up.

Two days ago, the "CHECK FUEL CAP" message came on.

I checked the manual. It said to shut off car, loosen fuel cap and then retighten, get in, start car and then if message comes on again, hold down the reset button to get the message to delete.

Well, I did all that and holding down the reset, whether just tapping it once or applying continued pressure, only moves it to the next setting (ie: temp, trip, odom, etc) it does not delete the message. The message is still there after scrolling through.

Reading the manual further indicates that if the malfunction indicator light also comes on, then it could takes a couple of days to disappear. Well my MIL did not come on, it was just the message.
My question is has anyone had this happen and if so, did the message go away on its own after a couple of days? Are the message and MIL supposed to come on together or just one or the other?

The manual says the MIL will come on, but it did not and the manual sounds as if it is the MIL that will disappear in a couple of days, not the message itself. The way the manual is written, the message is supposed to be deleted with reset button.

Just looking for any constructive imput on this.

okay, i just saw a thread that I did not see before on this issue. Mine has been on for two days, so hopefully a couple of more days will cure it.

I took this from a previous thread

"I just had this same problem... I checked it and put back on the cap... Still the warning was on my dash... Kinda bugged me driving around so i pressed the reset button on my dash beside the brightness buttons and it clears it till you start your car again. Good news i woke up this morning and it wasn't there any more at all... So i guess it just needs a little time to reset."

try reset, then disconnect battery, reconnect battery, then if it still comes on, had it occured to you there might actually be a problem? :)

theres also a known issue that sometimes the car trips the message for no real reason, and last i had read there still wasnt a fix for it. Just take it to the dealer, have them reset it and go from there.
