Engine Braking

Im sorry if this is a repost

Im kind of new in driving a stick shift/ downshifting and recently ive been trying to engine brake and to get this correct, engine breaking is for example- your in 3rd gear and you down shift to 2nd gear then to 1st to let the engine slow the whole car down right? If im wrong can somone please tell me what is engine breaking and how to do it?

is Engine braking bad for the engine and transmission?

please dont shift down to first unless your goin like 2 mph and then rev match from 2nd to 1st, unless your about to climb up a drive way there really is no need to downshift into first

He meant "braking". He's talking about using the engine to help slow down the car.

It is not bad for the engine and transmission as long as you rev match while downshifting, and it will save your brakes.

Some people will say engine breaking is bad for your engine while others will tell you it wont do anything different than normal driving if you shift at proper speeds. The way I think about it is its easier, and cheaper, to replace brake pads than engines

Just my $0.02

I like engine braking, and I downshift with rev matching, because:

1. It helps me practice for when I really need to downshift for speed
2. If rev matched correctly it saves brakes and doesn't wear down the clutch
3. It possibly saves fuel (car uses fuel at idle, cuts off most fuel when foot off accelerator)

most importantly; it sounds cool

i engine brake my cars all the time to slow down, but more importantly
to keep the motor within the torque curve while slowing down so that i
can pickup speed as needed during a quick manuver... like swirving away
from dumb drivers trying to light up a cigarette while talking on the phone.
she didn't even notice she changed lanes.

Engine braking is too slow, but downshifting is fun...I usually use "wheel" braking.

If you blip your throttle to match engine revs, you're causing minimal wear on the transmission. Since our cars are made for high-reving, you're not going to break the car downshifting.

There's a post somewhere on this board from someone who mishifted while downshifting and blew the motor. Honda did not cover it.

i dont even bother to downshift on my 350z.. unless im in road racing.... the VQ35's has enough Tq to get you going even on 2k rpm.
