extended warranty on 07 si...value?

i just picked up a 2007 civic si fpb at a dealer in lexington, ky and was given the option to buy an extended warranty. i am normally very against extended warranties, and have never been burned, but this seemed like a good deal.

the std warranty is 36k/3yr bumper to bumper, and i bought the option that extended that out to 80k/7yr. the salesman was apparently a "gold' level or somesuch and that meant i could get a the warranty at his cost ($975 instead of $1600).

i have never bough a brand new car before, and with all the electronics and such on it, and the fact the warranty gets me (and the wife) free roadside service and rental car at the dealer, it seemed like a good deal.

now the question, i am pretty sure i CAN cancel it if i want and get the unused part back, and am just having second thoughts about the value of the $ vs. the warranty. tell me some horror stories about things an extended warranty like this would have covered and how much $ it would have saved you, and i'll be more content with my decision.

thanks!

I didn't get it on mine b/c I'm gonna be modding my car and they always wanna blame everything on stuff that you do to your car, so....I think it's a good deal if you can afford it. I did get it on my old srt4 for free at the dealer and then when I was about to sell it, I called the number and cancelled it and they gave me money like I payed for it and just subtracted the amount of miles that I drove the car already. If you get rid of it, try to get the full amount.

yeah, i figure i'm not actually using it till i hit 36k anyway (since that's when the std warranty runs out). i can def. afford it, but then again i could use the $ for other things if i had it.

Unless you have it in the contract stating that you can cancel and get your money back, don't do it. When I sold cars, I didn't deal with this. The finance manager did so I'm not too sure what the contracts state but just a thought anyway.

Now if you so much as plan to put a CAI or SRI on your car, don't even bother wasting the time to get it. I did the same thing as Excalibur. They kept pushing me to get it and I was getting pissed and told them I was going to modify the car. I finally said "so, when I get my turbo after 36,000 miles, you'll still honor the warranty? No. Okay. End of discussion. I want my car now."

I didn't bother with the extended warranty because:
1. I was buying a Honda not a Ford
2. It's a waste of time to sit in a dealership all day when: Honda dealerships will find any way to make the repair outside of the warranty's scope (you did it, your mod did it, it's not a manufacturer's defect).
3. It's expensive, for the money you're better off with a security package (Civics are a popular stolen car and an upgraded alarm/LoJack would be a more prudent investment).

I'm about 1500 miles away from 36,000 on my '06 and i've brought it to the dealer twice about the third gear synchros. I'm worried about the trans after i'm out of warranty.

if you are buying extended warranty... half of the money goes to the finance manager.... that's where they make money from you... mine cost 1600 but cancelled it less than one year but got like 1500 back... every year it goes down or something

I got the extended warrenty and now i'm in the process of getting it prorated back to the principal. lost about $100+ in 3 mos. the process takes 4-8 week for the cancelation to go through. for $600 that's really good. plus w/MM act they can't void your whole warrenty.

You'll get less back with the more miles you put on the car.

that is considered normal wear and tear and not part of the warranty...the clutch is the only thing i would have gotten the value from on my acura, and it wouldn't have been covered anyway.

i may have to cancel it (not enough horror stories here to convince me to keep it).

I have the 120K/7year warranty. My car will remain completely unmodified, so I'm going to keep it.

Same with me. I got my Si as a cheap (and fun) daily driver to pile the miles on. I got the extended warrenty for what I think was a good deal $920.

The warranty would be appreciated if it were free (like Hyundai and Mitsubishi) but paying for it seems like it wouldn't be worth it also because it doesn't cover the thin paint, clutch & brakes (wear and tear), hoses, tires, extremely spirited driving or freak accidents like dropping from 6th to 2nd gear. When the exhaust eventually rusts and falls off I can think of a half dozen stainless steel (better) replacements.
To be honest, the Hyundai/Mitsubishi 100,000 mi/10 yr warranty is lame it's only the powertrain (not bumper to bumper), therefore it was to be something mechanically wrong INSIDE the engine or transmission and you better have proof of maintenance (oil chages/timing belt replacement) and it doesn't include things like sensors/spark plugs & wires either.

It may be from operator error, but 80 percent of the cars I have owned have had the AC clutch go out right around 100K miles. I've had power steering rack troubles before, too. I always seem to get my money back from the warranty. I don't modify my cars and have all services done at the dealer. I'm lazy. :)
