i got a problem
Noise problem. the noise is louder as the car sits. when i turn on my car (car still in park) and cut the wheel 2 inches left and 2 inches right, there is a noise up front. The noise is gone after I cut the wheel left and right once. Its like a loose bearing or a bad metal flex. when i drive it all day and park it and turn it off, i turn it back on, the noise is there but its slight. Funny thing is you can only hear it after start up and turning the wheel slightly (not moving, car in park). The dealer told me it might be impossible to fix! In order for them to fix it they would have to keep starting the car every 15 minutes or so to hear the noise. I cant hear the noise any other time except as descibed above. should this have anything to do with the brakes? I know its a problem because no1 elses civic makes this noise. Thanks for the help.

Possible Noise Source
I have noticed in my EX if you turn the wheel slightly while sitting in park with the motor running that the revs will increase slightly, then drop back. This is apparently not an unusual occurence with new Civics and other cars. Maybe you are hearing something related to this. Do you also see a rev increase that coincides with the noise you're hearing? I will also notice the rev change if I tweak the power window will idling in park. Good luck diagnosing your noise.

yes, the rpms do just as you have stated. The noise I am hearing is loud, definately not engine related. Its like a metal to metal clunk sound (sometimes 2 sounds(one when i turn left and one for turn right)). Its like something is offset and when i turn the wheel it sets itself back into place. It seems the longer the car sits in park the louder the noise is. Something in the steering system is affected when the car sits, just trying to figure it out. The dealership will need a good day to keep shutting off the car and turning it back on to hear the noise. They said they couldnt hear anything (bull shit). I need to figure this one out on my own and bring the problem to them. Dealerships are rediculous!

You guys should stop throwing nuts and bolts in the engine bay. I guess it will solve your problem
Don't worry LsedanX, your dealer never checked your car every 15 minutes. They checked it in the morning and before giving it back to you. My dealer is great but would never do something like that to find the trouble. The best you can do is to find the source of the problem and find a way to reproduce it as you wish. I've done that with my Mazda dealer for a weird noise that came when I turn my wheels. They checked it 3 times, never found the problem. One morning I was pissed off, stop by there, call the supervisor and told him to listen to the noise. He was sorry the other guys never found the source of the problem. To make sure I wouldn't come back for this problem he ordered the complete steering column, the power steering and everything that is related. Problem was solved. If your dealer sucks, change dealer. I live in a small town and we have 5 dealers... You should have the choice. And sometimes, it might be best for you to drive 30 miles to get good service. Good luck! |

ok I went to 2 dealers so far and none of them have any idea what it is. One dealer told me that it may be the power steer pump turning on! They are blowing me off. I have a video of this, please take a look. Thanks.

Nod Mods, regularly driven car. Dealer called me with some info regarding my noise problem. Apparently my Civic LX Sedan has a fancy steering pump. I only hear the noise when I 1st start the car and cut the wheel. He said the noise is the steering pump engaging because it is disengaged when the car shuts off. It is also not on when I am driving above 35 mph. Does this sound like Bull Shit or what? From what he said, its a feature for saving gas.

Hey LsedanX, I finally listen to your noise. It sounds a lot what my Mazda was doing. Get the parts replaced, don't tolerate that. If they don't want, ask for trying any other 8th in the parking lot to see if it makes the same noise. They should start moving...
Good luck! Keep us updated! |

If you have asked anyone about this and they own a Hybrid or an Si, they will not hear it because they have electric PS systems. The DX/LX/EX have a traditional hydraulic setup. |

The idle RPM change is supposed to happen. There is a pressure switch in the hose between the pump and rack that triggers when you steer. It tells the ECU to increase RPM, boosting pump speed to give you more assist.
Some whine is normal with cold fluid. You can get excessive whine with low power steering fluid levels. Check to make sure the fluid level is OK. -SWRT |
