Second gear problems..

My second gear problems.. are driving me insane.

I also have problems with 3rd gear, however, they only creep up on me when I don't have the clutch all the way in since it's a long throw between 2nd and 3rd, so I won't complain about that.

With second gear, it ALWAYS grinds if I shift from 7k+ RPMs from first into second. At first I thought I was doing the same with 2nd - 3rd (clutch not all the way in), but even with the clutch against the ground, it still grinds and grinds until the RPMs fall down.

I took it to my dealer, and heard the most shocking thing - Don't shift at 7k+ Rpms! The tech was literally trying to convince me that the car is going to live a short life if I ride it too hard like that. He took it for a spin and said he noticed it to, but the car was really not made to be shifted that high during regular driving. Fine.. but what about when you actually want to feel the 197 HP the SI is advertised with? In short, the tech told me if it gets worse during 'regular' driving to bring it in.. so what should I do?

The original --> "J" <--
Shifting at high rpm's to second is a known issue ... I cant find the right link but im sure someone here will. There is many posts about it.

I would speak to the svc manager. If honda builds a car that redlines at 50k...do u think people are gonna shift at 10 k? NO. It redlines at 8...so why not take it to 7 at least. My opinion...go to his boss. If they BS u go to the svc managers boss. And keep climbing the ladder... best of luck

If taking it up the ladder does not work at one dealership, take it to another.

My 07 Si sedan has been at the dealer for 2 days now with the famous 3rd gear problem. I called them today for an update and they said that they're going to pull the tranny out of my car and try to fix it or possible replace it. They service manager said that they found a TSB, so they are going to contact honda corp. I'll let everyone know what they say. I should find out tomorrow!

If you're shifting at redline from 1 to 2, you will have to slow down. Read below.

This is due to the fact that Honda designs all of their manual transmissions with double-cone synchronizers. The synchros for second gear get the most beating out of any in the transmission, and are always the first to go. While double cone synchronizers provide unbeatable levels of durability, there is a trade off.
