FYI 05 Accord Recall may affect your 06 Civic

My 06 Si (around 10,000 miles on it) has started to mysteriously stall and then will not start until it sits for 10 minutes or so. A mechanic looked at it and said it was intermittent power failure to the fuel pump and was most likely the relay. He wouldnt fix it because his dyagnostic machine wouldnt comunicate with the Honda ECM. I brought it to him because I will have to haul my car about 40 miles to the nearest honda dealer.......which I'd rather not do if I dont have too. I talked to a parts guy at one of the local Honda dealers today, I ordered a (39794-SDA-004 RELAY ASSY., FUEL PUMP) and he check out of curiosity and told me that it is the exact relay that Honda has recalled on the 05 Accords. I checked an OEM honda parts supplier online and indeed it is the very same part for the 05 Accord and the 06 Si.
I'm picking mine up after work it will cost $25 and should only take a few minutes to change. It's located in the fuse box under the dash on the drivers left side. I changed it and the car runs fine.

OK folks heres what you need to know, if your relay has Denso stamped on it No worries.........

If it has Mitsuba like mine did its a POS and is the part that was recalled on the Accords.

Check it or have your dealer check it next time your there, if its the Mitsuba relay get rid of it cause it will fail on you.

Thanks for the heads up!!

I have 34,000 miles on my car and recently had a hard time starting, but that was the only time. Other than that, everything's looking good.

Great information. I'll keep this mentally logged for future purposes.

Mike...Thank you very much for the information. I am glad to hear that it resolved your stalling issues and hope that it resolves the stalling issues that others have experienced.

I just pulled my relay and it is marked with the following:

MITSUBA
7003 5901
MADE IN JAPAN

BTW, both the Denso and Mitsuba relays are made in Japan. The replacement part number is 39794-SDA-305, H/C 8636524.

Good suggestion!

Done.

Stupid question, how can I locate this particular part?

A PIC of the location is in the link on the first post. I'll take a PIC and post in a few so you can see what needs to be removed to access.

Interesting...Here are two PICs. One showing the location of the relay (blue box on the top part of the fuse panel) and another blurry PIC of the relay itself.

Something is not right. I went to the dealer this morning to pick up the new relay and now I am confused.

The parts guy looked on his system and said that the original relay 39794-SDA-003 was later replaced by 39794-SDA-004. In addition, as per the Accord service bulletin, 39794-SDA-003 was later replaced by 39794-SDA-305.

The 2006 Civic Si has the 39794-SDA-004 relay listed as the replacement part number. The dealer did not have any in stock so I asked for the 39794-SDA-305 relay (the recommended repacement as per the Accord service bulletin). He brought out one relay with that part number and the relay itself was marked with "Mitsuba Made in Vietnam." I said that as per the service bulletin, I would have assumed that the part would have been made by Denso. He went back and grabbed all of the relays that they had in stock for this part number (about 30 units) and they all had the same markings.

The original relay in Mike's car said "Mitsuba Made in Vietnam" whereas mine said "Mitsuba Made in Japan." If 39794-SDA-004 is in fact the replacement Denso relay, then I wonder why it is not the recommended replacement for the Accord (39794-SDA-305).

It took them about one day to get 39794-SDA-004 in for me and it was manufactured by Denso.

The real question is if Honda knew the relay was bad in 05 why did they keep using them in 06.

Talk about being ironic. I ran the car on the dyno today. Went to the gas station after that and returned to the shop. The car then sat for about 1-2 hours. When I left, I made it half way home before the car just stalled and would not restart. It was in the low to mid 90's today. I checked the fuel pressure regulator and it registered zero. I waited a while and went back and to turn the car on without cranking (i.e., to build fuel pressure in the system) and it stayed at zero. I ended up getting a tow truck to bring the car home for the last 5 mile leg.

You can add me to the list of having a bad relay as well.

Honda should make it official for our cars as well. I know it's just 25bucks, but still.
