a/c compressor not spinning

When you first turn on the a/c, how long does it take for the compressor to kick in? Does it kick in right away? how do you know if your a/c compressor has locked up and won't spin or if it's something electrical?

Mine does not turn on instantly. I takes a few seconds.

If you are blowing warm air with the AC on, you have a problem, simple as pie!

Mine takes a second or two to kick on. As stated, if your blowing cold air your fine, if your blowing hot air your not.....

In the older civic there is a dryer and you can jump the dryer plug to get the compressor to spin. How do we get the compressor to manually spin?

You'll freeze it up and break something if you do that.

The AC on these cars is horrible. Mine blows spurts of hot air all every 30 seconds. It's been to the dealer twice, and they say it's normal. YOu can do a search on here and find out what I'm talking about. It has something to do with how they made the Civic Si more gas-mileage friendly.,

I know i was surprised. I had the AC on in a drive through once, not on the coldest setting. I heard the AC kick on and off, i'v never heard any car kick on and kick off the compressor w/ it in AC vent mode before ( i know defrost cycles on and off) they normally just run the compressor no matter what the temp is set to.

Do all Civics cycle the compressor like this? Doesn't seem like that'd do much in the durability department.

I'm just curious-it seems wierd having all the a/c complaints. I drive an '05 Accord and the a/c freezes me out even on the hottest days. And it doesn't cycle the compressor.

All AC compressors cycle...on...off...on. It is the way they operate. So, for the guy who say his does not...WRONG!! Some are more integrated, that is, you cannot feel the cycling easily but they all do. Just because you cannot feel it doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

This guy's right. There is a "pressure cycling switch" on the dryer. When the dryer pressure increase to a certain point, the compressor clutch kicks on. When it goes below the threshold, it turns off.

Okay I fixed my A/C. The problem was that I didn't have enought pressure (freon) inside the system so the compressor didn't kick in. Once i had enought pressue inside the system the compressor kicked in. I was almost ready to give up. hahah saved me some money. Back to what you guys where talking about, i think if you put your a/c on max a/c then the a/c will always be on but if you have just the a/c part on, then it will cycle itself on and off.

Nah. If the compressor never shut off, it would freeze up.
