Oil change at Honda dealership

From your experiences: do they torque the drain bolt to proper specs or tighten the shit out of it?

I don't know, they do it not me. :)

Frankly, if I take my car to the dealer for an oil change, if they over torque it, they will have a problem the next time I take it to them. That's one of my biggest reasons for taking it to the dealer, if something ever happens to it related to an oil change....guess who I can blame!

Sorry I didn't really answer your question, just my $.02

Did you have a bad experience at a Honda dealer with this?

Check to see if the dealership has been Express Service certified by honda. If they have been, then they use pre-set torque wrenches to torque the drain bolt and the filter to spec. Otherwise, they just use a normal wrench. And no, we don't torque the shit out of it. That's Jiffylube

I can't tell you how many cars we see come in needing new drain plugs after they have gone to a jiffy lube and torque the shit out of it.

All dealers "should" be torquing to spec. takes 1 second to do it properly.

Check the bill and make sure they used 5W-30. I just got mine changed today and realized they used 5W-20. Took 15 minutes to convince them, but they changed it to the right one.

They torqued the shit out of mine. I did my first oil change on my old 06 LX at the dealership. When I went to do the second oil change, it took a hell of a lot of effort to get the bolt off. There was also no crush washer at all. They didn't change my filter either. I stuck a piece of duct tape on there to make a mark and it was the same filter. Makes me think they probably didn't even use the Royal Purple I gave them. I'll be doing all the oil changes on this Si.

Do you have an Si? Honda recommends non-Si's use 5W-20.

I've had this happen at a Toyota dealership... was a good reminder of why I normally change my own oil. (just imagine how often this happens and the average person will never even know )

Thanks for the info on the ECT sensor. Learn something new everyday.

As for the dearler not changing your oil filter, on the maintenance minder system a symbol A states oil replacement only and no filter change at a cost of $32.88 here in Ontario....our dealership always does the filter anyways just to be safe for an additional $4. So if the dealer is following what Honda Canada says, for A services the filter is not required till the B service.

Cheers.

Yep, I was aware of that. However, I asked the service manager specifically what was done and in that conversation, the filter was mentioned. Also, the filter was on my invoice. Go figure.

Well in that case, that is brutal. I don't know how some dealers do business but it doesnt make the rest of us look good! Sorry to hear you had a bad experience.

Cheers.

I just took my '07 Si Sedan to have the first oil change done at Rick Case Honda through their Express Service department about an hour ago. I watched the tech do the following:

Loosen some sort of bolt (not the drain bolt) above the oil filter (and to the right if you are facing the car) using a socket and extension. It took him a lot of work to loosen it, so much that he had to get someone else to break it loose. Looks like there was a cover underneath that he was working above without removing.

Then he took off the drain bolt with a wrench and let it drain.

Then he took off the filter.

Then he retightened (or put on a new one, could not tell) whatever the bolt was he loosened with the socket and extension. Looked like he was above the plastic cover on the bottom.

Then he put what looked like a new drain plug on (could not tell if it had a crush washer or not) and tightened it buy hand with a wrench.

Then he put on a new filter and tightened it by hand (never used a wrench of any type).

Then he sprayed some sort of cleaner on the bottom and wiped it down.

He rotated the tires which he then torqued when the car was lowered.

He then put oil in from the overhead dispenser and put the oil cap back on and closed the hood. He never checked the dipstick or cranked it up and checked to see if the level was correct.

Now keep in mind it's pouring outside, and unlike all the other techs I watched that parked the customer's car inside the building when they were done (so the customer could stay dry when they leave), he takes my car and parks it outside in the rain, opens the drivers side door and lets it get nice and soaked, then calmly gets out and walks back to the building carrying all the paperwork in his hand while it gets soaked from the pouring rain.

My question is, is there any other bolt that need to be removed or replaced for an oil change other than the drain bolt?
