Clutch Gone Bad

ryryninja stopped over today and I changed his clutch and pressure plate. He said that the clutch was worn and would not shift into reverse when the engine was running. The car had about 50k miles on the clock which seemed a little odd that the clutch would have been spent so soon considering the type of driving (mostly highway). In any event, he is now back on the road and is a happy camper. FWIW, during the install the clutch had plenty of material left, but the fell apart (I'll let him explain the circumstances). Now for the PICs:

Clutch side one showing PICs of parts from this side. The spring broke and lodged one end into the other:

Center shaft out of wack on the same side:

Clutch side two showing PICs of parts from this side. Spring is the same one in the first PIC, just flipped over. At the 11 o'clock position, there is a portion of metal that sheered off and lodged under the clutch disk.

Same side where you can see all of the other cracks:

Yeah, clutch dumping going on there. If you didn't do it someone did before you bought that car.
Or defective.

He is the original owner...I'll let him explain the circumstances. Pilot bearing was fine and there was no excessive wear fon the pressure plate splines where the throwout bearing makes contact.

Meaning any test drivers before him, if there was.

That looks rough. Did he replace it with a stock OEM clutch or did he go with an aftermarket one?

Thanks again for the help blueroadster! Powershifting.. no never powershifted once in my life.. too scared too. I know I miss shifted early on when I first got the car over a year and a half ago because this is my first manual tranmission car. And no one test drove my car.

I do drive a lot, as I use my car for my job. Have I launched.. maybe a handfull at most.. I don't like to launch to be honest with you. I do downshift a lot. I will be cutting the downshifting a lot. I'm pretty sure I do downshift in excess at times.

No it has not been tracked but most of my driving is spirited.

Clutch disc actually had approx. 50% life in it left but as you can see it is unusable due to other damage. I'm sure it wouldn't be as bad as when I first noticed the problems but money to get a new clutch and time to get it installed was hard to come by.

Car drives like its new.. all gears engage like a hot knife thru butter. I know I'm relatively new to MT cars have a 18months experience now... but I don't abuse my car.

CliftNotes::
A few launches
Excessive downshifting
Maybe miss shift but that was when I first got the car
Exedy OEM Replacement

Thanks again blueroadster! I'm once again a happy Si owner

Damn... This is just the post I needed. My clutch blew on me last Friday night on my way home from Atlanta. I had to call a tow truck and they towed it to a Honda dealer around where I was. The car is still there and they say I need a new clutch disc, throwout bearing and pressure plate.. I'll try to post pics of my disc as well, if they give it back to me. How much did this run you if you don't mind me asking? They are quoting me around 875 bucks...

Well it depends if you plan on going OEM.. check on ebay for clutch kits by exedy for rsx type-s.

I got mine for 138 shipped. Comes with pressure plate, flywheel, throwout bearing, alignment tool and I think it came with a pilot bearing too right blueroadster?

And blueroadster, his neighbor and myself installed it so no labor fee.

If he was powershifting, he would have thrown his gears out along with the clutch. But as you can see, just clutch problems.

I'll post s PIC of my stock clutch later today. It looked fine and only had 7k miles on it before removal.

Here are two PICs of my stock clutch removed after about 7k miles. As you can see, the gear is centered perfectly (it looks just a tad bit off, but that was because I did not align the camera dead center when taking the PIC).
