Problem with ABS or tires?

hey everyone, this is my first post...and if this is out in the searches or if i'm in the wrong section, my bad...i still havent quite mastered the forum yet

today i almost got nailed by a ford work van cuz the dude changed right into me, cut me then slammed his brakes cuz the one in front did apparently.....my problem is that when i reacted and nailed my brakes (at about 70ish), i felt no abs, and my tail swung out almost uncontrollably and i'm pretty sure it happend cuz i locked a back wheel, but idk for sure

my question is if anyone has had any problems similar, w/abs or their ex all seasons....is it my luck or is there a problem i'm having

id appreciate the help thanks

wow, that sounds bad, the back may have swung out lust because you transfered all your weight (and grip) to the front when slamming the barkes

but the abs definatly should have came on, and the ebd should have been able to help you with the back

You could try driving down a empty street, and slam on the brakes, if there is no ABS or lockup try it with some water, if there is still no ABS you definatly have a problem.

or just take it to the dealer

moved it to the mechanical problems area,

I'd have to agree with TJ here, I'd test it on an empty street, etc. If not, I'd have the dealership take a look at it to verify things are in check.

I'm not sure if wheels would lock up at 70, specially on dry road. I would try it when it's pouring, or snowing

idk if i got an abs warning during the incident cuz i was kinda...taken by the moment shall we say

but i definitly didnt get one after it

im really puzzled at why the car reacted the way it did..its not like i was going into the lane and nailed the brakes, cuz then it would be the fact that my wheel would have been turned a little or whatever

thanks for the feedback, i think ill just give it a shot on an empty street, and if i still encounter a problem ill just go to my dealer

when slamming the brakes mine goes on always, at the last autocross event it came on entering almost every turn, and that was definatly below 70mph

btw, mine is a FA5 w/AS tires, but the ABS should be the same

Odd as I can hit a freaking man hole cover at 20 and my abs will kick in, rather annoying sometimes but safe than sorry is the way to go!

Your back-end swung out probably because you slammed on the brakes and jerked the steering wheel at the same time. Did you try to turn to avoid the car infront of you? If that was the case, then the ABS wouldn't come on since all 4 wheels were still spinning (no lock-up) when the rear got loose. It would be the sudden lateral load on the rear tires that got them loose. The VSA in the Si would help in this case.

From what I have heard from numerous techs, is that the ABS will not activate if all wheels are locked up, it will if 1 or up to 3 I think are locked up....reason for this is that if all wheels lock up at the same time the vehicle cannot tell the difference between you normally coming to a stop or doing an emergency brake. How ABS normally works is that it detects a difference in wheel speeds from each sensor and if one or two wheels lock up and other two are still moving at a more constant speed they will activate the pulsating to get all wheels back to an even rotation to help with control, rather then a total spin out.

So maybe with the fast braking combined with fast turn, almost tricked the ABS system. Could be wrong though, just my input.

i feel sorry for u. my abs works overtime in my car. anytime i press the brakes on a bumpy road i feel the abs. (which is almost every situation in nyc). i hated it but when abs saved my life when a big rig swung across 2 lanes into my exit lane, i started to like it. if it wasnt for abs i would've smacked into that truck and my si would be no more
