Vsa....

When I purchased my 07 Si sedan the dealer mentioned that the 06 si did not have VSA...Is this true? I don't know much bout this system and would like some basic feedback on it, problems they have had, if it is liked or disliked..Stuff like that, Thank You

I think I'm a rare case but a few weeks ago I had to leave my car at the dealership for about 4 days so they could fix my VSA.

The indicator light came on that it wasn't working and toggling the switch didn't do anything. I brought it in, they said it was covered by warranty... I think it took them like the first two days combined to figure what was wrong with it and after that they decided it was taking too long and ordered a replacement part of the entire system/assembly - however it works.

I think they determined it was the sensor that decides whether or not to "assist" that stopped working.

Anyway, I've had no problems with it since, and prior to that, when we had heavy snow in NJ back in March I think, it helped me stay on the road a few times over a few inches of unplowed snow on the NJ Turnpike.

Apart from that, I only ever see it turn on (indicator light) if I drop the clutch hard from 1st->2nd at 7800-8000 and wheel spin a bit.

I read somewhere that if you take your car to an autocross track you should turn it off.

Hope this proves useful-

Tim

Yes, my 07 Si Coupe has VSA. It flashes whenever I'm taking a corner pretty hard or shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd (wheel spin/hop and such).

The 06 coupes don't have VSA but the 07 coupe has. I had no problems with my VSA I guess because I usually turn it off. Haha

I'm curious about your statement...please share how it limits the car's capabilities.

When launching you need to have it turned off. Bc of the wheel hop it attempts to compensate thinking the car's outta control instead of letting me have control of it. There's a HUGE turn entering our base (3 lanes wide all turning left) and if I take that turn at anything above 45mph then even if I mash the gas it'll cut the power until it feels the car is w/n a safe g-force and then allow the full throttle to cut back on. When you take it off, you realize what the car's turning potential really is. It's an entirely different car on the auto-x/rally course when you've got it on vs. off. I had to learn to drive with and without it to attempt to master the fully abilities of the si. but then again, if you do a search on that, you'll find at least one post about it with more replies.

here's one..

ummm, are you always driving your car at its limit on your daily commute

btw, you press the button and it turns off, so its not like it really holds you back.

I'm not a fan of VSA but I can see where it could help safety in some situations. The government is about to mandate it on all new cars across the board, so you better get used to it. VSA definitely screws with shifting at redline, I don't like it. Once you get some wheelhop going into 2nd, get ready for a rough(er) shift to 3rd. Although I have barked 3rd with it on -- on an incline . Much better with it off. I have to remember to turn it off whenever I want to get my on. Annoying.

I seriously think it would have helped in the Civic v Tree accident, and its mostly important for drivers that aren't used to oversteer.

but even the s2000 has VSA now, I just hope Honda keeps the off button there

I just drove an '07 S2000 on Saturday, and you can shut the VSA off.

yeah guys, the VSA is not a bad feature.. im another one from jersey and when that snow hit, the vsa helped as much as it could. however, when im at the track, i always make it a habit to turn it off because you simply CANNOT run the car 1/4 or auto X with it on. it really does limit the car pretty severely, in a good way if u need it.. but obv the at tracks its not needed..

oh yeah, from what i have read it is not only traction control, but turning assistance too, i think if it detects slipping around a turn/losing control, etc. not bad.. like someone above said, as long as they leave the off button in the cars, then im a happy guy

I had the same problem, but before taking it to the dealer, I tried disconnecting the battery in the hopes that it would reset the light... but it didn't work... so I drove around like that for a couple days and just before I was about to take it to the dealer, the light turned off and the system was fully functional again... self fixing car ftw!

Quick overview since the salesman didn't know squat.

VSA is a combo of traction control and stability control

Traction control works by lowering throttle when the tires start to slip while on the gas (also our traction control works alot better than most due to the drive by wire throttle, the gas pedal is nothing more than a volume control on a radio, no cables, so VSA can just drop throttle rather than retarding timing or reducing fuel)

Stability control helps the car in a turn. If you under steer (take a turn too fast and the car stops turning) it'll apply a inside brake to help steer the car back and reduce throttle. If you fishtail it'll apply an outside brake and lower throttle.

The Helical LSD (limited slip differential) forces the tire w/ the most traction to spin upto (key word is upto) 80% (correct me if i'm wrong) of the speed of the tire w/ the least traction. So basically both front tires spin under power. (like those old *** ads that transfers power from the wheels that slip to the wheels that grip)

Also note that VSA is on when not lit on the dash. The salesman sounded like if you hit the VSA button it turns on. If you see a /!\ on the dash, its off, if you see "VSA /!\" means theres a problem w/ VSA and its off (had this happen up hill in the snow w/ summer tires, vsa was active for like 2 mins tryin to help me grip and i got this, worked fine w/ a restart of the engine) and if /!\ blinks it means VSA is on and currently working.

Hope that helps

If you wanna have some fun, go into a empty parking lot at 3 am in the rain (make sure you have room so you dont crash into anything, i dont want to get sued over this ) and do about 30 mph and take a quick turn and floor it, it'll drop the throttle way down and help the car steer.

Just remember VSA has its limits, if you push the car too far you will crash.
