Other than learning to drive [better], would a Short shifter benefit me?

Hey all..

Lately I've been noticing how crappy my manual skills are. My biggest problem is this - I'm accelerating in first gear, and then when I shift into second, I find myself only shifting halfway into the gear before releasing the clutch. Obviously, this results in a horrific grinding noise.

If I had a short-shifter to lessen the throw of the gear, would that help? For some reason no matter how much I practice and do it right when normally driving, whenever I try and accelerate moderately aggressively I miss the gear. Thoughts?

A s.s. combined with the base bushings and shift cable bushings will make your shifts more crisp and controlled (best description I can give).

Yes, reducing the throw would definitely help in your situation. You'd be getting it into gear faster.

i think you need to get used to the stock length before buying a short shifter if you want to improve shifting. it took me 3 weeks to learn how to drive my 97 GST smoothly without jerking. just shift slowly for a month and youll get the hang out it. if you have a 06 itll be harder because of the rev hang. i test drove an 06 si and i was jerking a lil because of the rev hang. If youre shift feels notchy you should change your MTF it makes it smoother so it will go into gear easier. just practice it.

I had the exact same problem as you. Occasionally It would feel like i got it all the way into second but when I let out the clutch It would grind. A few months ago I got a short shifter and I haven't grinned second since.

yes a short shifter is an improvement it shortens the duration of your throw through gears...this can cause grinds if you shift faster then the trans can slow down for the next gear though....
