Front Passenger side rattle above 65mph

I think I've read about every thread there is on rattles, but I have to "vent" my frustration. I've also held off from posting but here goes. About three weeks ago I noticed a very speed dependent rattle coming from the right front or passenger side of my car when I was on the highway. It is very noticeable above 65mph...but not under that. I have read about the left power mirror problems and passenger seat issues but, from my observation, this rattle seems to be behind the dash or somewhere in the engine compartment. I have even tried applying pressure all around the interior to see if this affects it....nothing...the rattle is still there.(also not the dipstick) Monday will be my second visit to the dealer( about this problem. There was no resolution the first time. One thing I have noticed is that it is loudest on highway especially when there are crosswinds.....has anyone experienced a similar rattle??? I don't want to clog the board, but I would appreciate help....Im not sure Im going to get it from the stealership? Ohhh...I have an 07 Si sedan. thanks

i probably have... at present i have these noises coming from the passenger side of the cabin:

"tapping" sound from the seat during deceleration
rattle from passenger front airbag (pressing on an airbag component above the glovebox fixes this one temporarily)
tapping/creaking/rubbing from the whole dash in general
metallic rattling sound
loud plasticky rattle over bumps
clicking noise from the seat durung decel.
rattle from centre console storage box lid

what kind of noise is your rattle? chances are i already have it, and when my car goes in for service next friday, it might get fixed and i'll be able to tell you what's wrong with yours. (i'm also consulting lawyers to discover what legal options are available to me, my car has had 26 faults so far in 12.5 months of ownership, i'm not taking this crap anymore and fully intend to raise hell at the dealer if all my problems aren't fixed)

can you replicate it by hitting the passenger side dash (on the top just above the glovebox)?

Try pushing down on your passenger seat as the rattle is occuring. If it stops, then it's your passenger seat which is a common problem. Basically take out the seat, zip-tie any loose wires together, be careful as to not tie down the wire that's connected to the slider, and re-tighten the seats down in a cross pattern. That cured my problem.

hhhmmm, I wonder if I might have broken some bumper clips. I have the same problem when I hit 65mph and above...especially with crosswinds. I noticed if a car gets in front of me at 65 or above, the sound starts to quiet down since there isn't as much wind rushing against the car. While driving I can hear it like it's in front of me, but just outside of the car.

All start right after installing the dc race header. I know the header isn't hitting anything...not too mention the sound only happens at that mph or at lower mph like 55 sometimes due to harsh crosswind. uhhh, time too look at the front bumper I guess. I looked at the top panels you have to take off for the header install, but that's not it.

Rattle above 65....What is this?

Hello All,

I am experiencing the same rattling noise when going over 55mph when it is windy. I think it may be this box (see attachement), as it is not fastened tightly and is positioned near the cabin intake. What is this box and has anyone else solved their rattling by making this fit tighter?

Thank you for your replies,

Daniel

This is my first post as a SI owner. I drove my new car home from Chicago to Grand Rapids on saturday and didnt notice any noise. Today going to work I have the same noise some of you were describing...rattle that starts between 65-70 and gets worse from 70-80. (sounds like my fender flapping in the wind.)
If I can figure out what it is then I can take it to the dealer and tell them whats wrong and eliminate the guesswork and multiple trips.

2nd day with annoying rattle on highway:
From what I can tell my ECU is tight. I think i can definetly hear it from both sides or its just somewhere in the middle and it sounds like its on both. It does sound like somthing metallic. If you were to take your finger and flick a body panel like your door. but really fast and varying when the wind kicks up.
what I tried:
There is ruber piece that was kind of loose under the bumper...like an under spoiler. I thought maybe it was coming from there but it still happened after i took it off.
my car has the HFP front lip...i would like to hear what everyone else has...it sounds like it could be from the lip.

I've had the same rattle whenever the car goes above 60 miles an hour. I have to bring the car in for warranty work and will ask them to tighten the hood latch. If that does not work, I'll try the black tape fix suggested by 02SilverSiHB. Has anyone else tried it?

Possible Cause

Jrak,

I noticed this today after reading a different post (see pics...with driver's door open near the bottom hinge). The hook for the molding is not fastened to the latch (there is also another latch near the top hinge). You may want to check your's to see if either one of these are not fastened properly. If you do have the same issue, you can have the dealer fix it for you when you bring it in. (I am not going to mess with it until next weekend as I think I need to take the wheel off and remove the plastic wheel well to get to it and I'm too tired to mess w/ it tonight).

I'll let you all know what the outcome is when I get around to latching it back on.

the dealer found my problem. it was the grille. the radiator cover and the grille were not seated together correctly and it was causing the rattle.

I also have this speed/wind dependent rattle. It seems like there are several possible causes for such rattles. I will try to find mine and ad to the possible solutions in this thread. My rattle sounds like a ziptie was installed without cutting off the dangling end and the wind causes it to slap against something else. This is not necessarily the case but that’s how it sounds. I already partially removed the plastic liner in the left front wheel well to clean some sort of sticky gunk between the plastic liner and metal. No luck from that. Keep the solutions coming please.
