26,000 miles and tires need replacement?

I've got an '06 LX sedan. The last time I had my tires rotated, the shop told me I needed new tires. Sure, typical shpleel from a tire salesman. Of course I declined. Well a couple of weeks ago I got a flat, and the shop that patched it told me the same thing. They even measured the tread in front of me and explained that the left front tire was significantly worse than the rest.

I left it at a Honda dealership this morning to have them inspect. Of course right off he told me "tires wear out, depends on driving patterns, blah blah" I told him to inspect it and if they couldn't find anything, I wanted a manager.

So what gives? I drive all highway miles and maintain the car like I should. The car doesn't pull like it's out of alignment. Anyone else had to replace tires early?

that isn't necessarily early for stock tires. stock tires from honda are known to wear down quickly. how often did you rotate the tires? uneven wear can be attributed to many factors such as aggressive turning/driving and not rotating your tires frequently (i think it's usually every 7500 mi, but not sure). if you want long lasting tires, get ones that are rated for higher treadwear. if they show you that your tires are bald (e.g use a penny), you definately should change them.

Did you often rotate your tires? The tires from the factory suck. I was at 32,000 kilometers and my tires were at the end of its life.

I've rotated 3 times since I got the car, around every 7-8k miles.

I think it's silly to expect them to be worn out, stock tires or not. My last car was a Prizm, and the stock tires lasted nearly 65,000 miles.

I'd let these tires go bald, but the car shakes so bad beyond 60mph, something's got to be done.

My dealership told me the stockers should only last about 20k miles. It's just another area the car companies shave off production price. When they DO put good tires on your stock car, you will pay for them(alot)

Isn't that a sign that your alignment is out of whack? That would explain your tires wearing prematurely.

Its actually more the softer, shorter life tires give the car a nice quiet ride that most people are looking for in their new cars. When you put on longer life tires you will notice that the road noise goes up. You get either quiet ride and short life or some road noise and long life

If one tire is significantly more worn than the other three and the car shakes as you indicate it could have internal damage (broken, or shifted steel belt). The tire could look normal but be damaged. This is not uncommon. If the belt is not placed perfectly true abnormal wear patterns will happen. However, 26K miles isn't necessarily too early for a OEM tire to wear out and it depends heavily upon individual driving habits, maintainence e.g. rotation...checking tire pressure frequently etc.

Update on the visit to the dealership. Nothing was wrong with the alignment. The balancing was off enough to cause the shaking.

They refused to do anything about it. As ethlar said, and the service agent confirmed, they put on cheap tires to bring down the costs, so expecting more than 30k out of these Turanzas is expecting too much.

Apparently the Turanzas have a bad rep. I priced new tires today at Discount Tire and Goodyear, and they said "oh yeah, those are $hit."

Given my other quirky problems with the car that Honda can't/won't bother fixing (rough idle, rev hang, notchy 5 speed, hesitation at full throttle to name a few), I'm probably just going to trade it in and look at Mazda or Nissan or something.

Most OEM tires suck and wear quick. This is especially true for cars like my wife's 05 corolla that has the suckiest tires man invented.

My wife has had 3 corollas new ranging back to 2000 and not one set lasted more than 20K. She drives real careful and does not speed.

I am quite surprised that the Goodyear RS-A's on my 06 are wearing well and still handling pretty good after 12K
