Nav issue - auto day/night mode

It seems I'm having an intermittent nav issue with the auto day/night dim mode. Sometimes when I start that car at night (or whenever I put the lights on) the nav unit does not auto dim even though that's what is has been set to do (I double checked this setting many times.) Sometimes if it will not auto dim, if I press a different setting for the climate controls it will auto dim?

On a somewhat related note when I turned the lights on during the day the nav unit would not auto dim to the black map? Is there some other sensor that detects day/night so the auto dim isn’t based solely on the headlights turning on?

Anyone else have this problem?

Mine does the same thing, but I tend not to worry about it. At night when you have your lights on, you can hit the minus button for the dimmer and it'll turn the nav to "night" mode without having to go through the menu. That's what works the best for me.

Yea. Don't think I'll go complain just yet b/c I'd rather not be without my car and I don't really want them pullin it apart and scratchin stuff up.

There are 3 settings on the dimmer switch:

-- Have both the dash and NAV dim when lights are turned on
-- Have just the dash but not the NAV dim when the lights are turned on (hold down + button until it reaches full brightness and then press - once)
-- Have both the dash and NAV stay at full brightness (hold down + button)

I've also noticed on mine that when there is still some light outside (such as at dusk) and I turn my lights on the NAV doesn't dim right away until it gets darker. I can't be sure but I suspect there is a light sensor on the NAV unit that auto dims when the ambient light reaches a certain threshold. I suspect this is because the night mode is difficult to see (with the black background) unless it's totally dark so the unit tries to compensate by going to night mode when it's dark enough. I still think it doesn't wait long enough and at times I've had to manually turn up the brightness to see and then turn it down when it gets darker but it's better than nothing.

I think it worked! You indeed need to make sure that the brightness is anywhere under the full setting for it to auto dim. I looked in the manual and it backed this up. Guess I should have looked a little harder. Thanks Type X, good call!
