06 Civic doesnt go straight at high speeds!

Hey everyone,
Any of you have the same problem or me, or know what the problem is? I noticed as soon as I got on the interstate that my car was all over the road. 06 Civic LX 4dr A/T with around 17k miles. By all over the road I mean if I didnt hang on tight to the wheel my car would lose control. I never had this problem before so I figured maybe it was just really windy out, but everytime I have gotten on the interstate since then, my car drifts back and forth out of control. I am sure if you saw me driving you would think I am drunk or something. I have driven my sister's car and a friends car since and their cars are fine on the same road, but mine has no stability at all. It is difficult to drive. The faster I go the worse it gets, and it becomes noticeable around 55mph. I checked and all of my tire pressures are fine. I am taking my car into the dealership soon and would like to know what to tell them. Is this a common problem? I didnt know what to search for.

Go in and get an alignment dude, Have them balance and rotate your tires.

I think I might know what your talking about, but yours sounds worse. When travling on the highway my car seems to move from left to right, I don't feel out of control but it is annoying. It seems to only happen when I get on the roads with the groves in it(not really sure how to put it). It's like my car follows the groves in the road, which are not perfectly straight. Let me know if this is what you seem to be experiencing because I want to find a remedy...BTW this has been going on since day 1.

What they said, check for balancing and alignment. Make sure you have the correct tire pressure and rotate the tires every 5000 miles.

yea it is just like that. it feels like my car is following a random, somewhat zigzag path down the road. if i let go of the wheel it could veer left, veer right, and then correct itself or not correct itself... it seemed completely random.

Thanks guys I will make sure my tires are rotated and balanced when i go into the dealership. also i will have them check the alignment. at least now i feel like i know what im talking about instead of just saying 'my car squiggles on the interstate'

I know exactly what you're talking about. I experience the same thing on the highway. It starts around 50-60 and gets worse as you go faster. It seems to happen mostly while accelerating... I think it's just because we have light cars... I just picked mine up 3 weeks ago; I don't think my alignment could be off already (I haven't hit any potholes or anything... yet).

they are light cars, but my sister's car, a hyundai elantra (similar size, if not smaller than my civic) arent all over the place like my car. also, i never noticed a problem at all until recently. I drive the same interstate every day (over 20 miles.. no traffic) so i know the road well, and for the first 15k i thought my civic handled the road quite impressively, even at high speeds (>80mph), and then all of a sudden i noticed it was losing control.

its a pretty aerodynamic car, it should stay straight without much effort.

Well, a few things are apparent.
1) the car didn't do this when new or newer with fewer miles so whatever happened is tire pressure OR alignment OR suspension OR the tires themselves. If I had to guess (and that is what it is) I would say that at least one of your tires has developed a broken or shifted steel belt. Is tire wear even across the tread on all 4 tires? Does the car now make a noise that increases with speed and "sounds" like it could be coming from the tires? The noise would be similar to a winter tire drone or ...don't laugh...a wop...wop (no ethnic slur intended) type noise? Frequently tires fail internally with no external evidence.

My 2007 SI Sedan has an unsettling feel above 85 or so. My old Mazdaspeed (2003) would do nearly 140 with NO problems - felt like my 2000 Camaro - solid as a rock. The SI, while spectacular on the curves does not instill confidence at high speed on a straight line. It feels that you could just lose it
if you had to kind of yank the steering wheel. I'd describe it as being like a 'tank slapper' on a motorcycle. However - i'm not confident enough to test my theory like I would have been in the Camaro. The camaro would have pointed the way I jerked it, and then settled right down. Same with the Mazda. Having badmouthed my lovely car - i must say that after really driving it to it's limits on the Dragon in NC/TN and the Cherahola Skyway - the car is absolutely amazing with sharp turns at high speeds. It just feels "hinky" on a straight line at mid to high speed....
