i always rev match when downshifting 2+ gears (single clutch), but when upshifting i dont, since there is no jerk.. i will go from 3rd to 6th a lot.. since im in no hurry when going from 3rd to 6th, i guess i could double clutch, but i was wondering how it differs from downshifting.. im thinking i can just put it in neutral, and let off the clutch for 1 second, then shift.. cuz im upshifting, so i wont need to rev the engine, thus why i can just clutch in > neutral > clutch out for 1 second (while doing nothing else) > clutch in > 6th > clutch out.. right? is this how you double clutch upshift 2+ gears? im guessing when you let the clutch out, the tranny is forced to match engine speed, which is at about 2000 rpms at that time probably, since it has had time to fall from where you were in 3rd, thus the tranny matches engine speed automatically without you pressing on the gas at all, right?

I've been driving stick for about 7 months now and I feel pretty comfortable driving it normally. I do have a few questions though...
1) When shifting into any gear (while in motion), is letting out the clutch slowly for a smooth shift bad/causing premature wear? 2) I was pushing it kinda hard the other day and chirped the tires from 2-3. What causes the tire to chirp like that? (too much gas?) |

![]() I'm very new to this driving a stick thing (3 weeks)... i've read about rev matching but i can't even think about doing it yet..lol. i just got comfortable with listening to music while driving my manual. it seems like it would help smooth my shifing like you all say... i will try it when i get more confortable. there's a lot of good info in here! thanks to you all! ![]() ![]() |

okay so i just got an Si and i've got the shifting pretty much down, its just i stall out when i get nervous or am on a hill. i have a question tho
for a smooth shift, would you add gas after you reach the friction point on the clutch? when my friend gave me a quick lesson he told me he learned by just adding gas while the clutch was down and slowly letting the clutch go if someone could answer this question id greatly appreciate it because i wouldnt have to use the handbrake method which IMO doesnt really work to teach me anything |

For the nervous thing Id have to say Ive either stalled or peeled out so many times from being nervous, Alls I would say is relax and screw the bastard behind you if hes beeping because u were looking else where when the light turned green. And for your 2nd concern are you speaking of a down shift or and upshift it may or may not vary a little. |

I've never used the handbrake method mentioned here. I've been driving standard trannies since I started driving and there's really no reason to. Even when going uphill, use the normal brake untill you feel the clutch enguage, then move your foot over to the gas and give it a little and finish launching like normal. It's not as hard as it sounds and is far less wear than revving high and slipping the clutch more than you need to.
