What is the little hole under the gas cap for?

I spilled some gas in the gas compartment today, and I was going to rinse it out with water when I saw a little hole below the gas cap. I was wondering if it had anything to do with gas vapors? And if it was okay to rinse the area out?

I've always assumed this was to drain spilled gas...

That would make sense too. I guess I'll go check my manual to see if it has any information on it.

Every gas container has an air hole... It's common sense man. Haven't you ever used a gas container to fill up a lawnmower? It has to be vented properly.

I think when the gas temp changes, it may expand.. so when u overfill the tank, the can can leak instead of blowing the smithereens outta ur whip! also for vapor!

actually im a mechanic and thats not what that is for, it is just a drain for if you spill gas or if water gets in there so it dont just sit there, then when you take off it goes thru the gas cover and goes all over your car( gas will eventually eat away paint), and that is the purpose of that. cars today have evap systems to take care of pressure and expansion, and it wont expand enough to blow up, it would break the gasket on the gas cap and you would get a check engine light. Is it UNBELIEVABLE that a car company isnt dumb enough to let water pour right into a gas tank! i surely hope you dont reproduce because the future looks dismal for your kids being around all these dumbasses (sarcasm if you cant tell)

If smoking while filling up isn't bad enough, one time I saw this woman smoking and left her car on while filling up, with two kids in the back seat. Needless to say, I quickly left the station even though my low fuel light was on.

While I am not a mechanic, I do have common sense and experience on my side. I don't know who the sarcasm is directed at, but let's clear this up once and for all:

Yes truflip, you are correct. That 'pocket' beneath the filler neck is for catching gasoline overflow and prevent it from spilling out onto your paint; the purpose of the hole is to drain ANYTHING that may collect there, including gas, water, beer, and piss.

the sarcasm was pointed to you because you were so ingnorant over nothing, but i thought it was funny that you also were wrong and didnt have a clue but just say things, and i know its a drain thats what i was pointing out, but it does not have anything to do with the tank its self.
