Code Scanners?

Howdy,

I recently bought a code scanner. Theoretically it supports OBD2 & CAN, which is what I thought the '06+ Civic was using...

I can't get it to link with the car. Can anyone confirm what specs a code scanner needs to support for this car?

Here's the scanner:
http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/cta...emnumber=94217

which appears to be a rebadged version of this one from Autel:
http://www.auteltech.com/gs400.htm

Anyone have any advice/input here?

Thanks!

Mark

I'm using a Snap-on MT2500 scanner with Global OBD2 software support. My asian/european software update is only about 6 months old. Thus I was unsuccessful trying to link it up to my 8th gen.

I ordered a CAN adapter from my Snap-on dealer and it's on its way. As of info from their technical support, OBD2 scanners won't on new vehicles like Mazda3, 5, 8th gen Civics... etc. I'll update if the CAN would work as expected.

For vehicles that are Model Year 2006 or newer, Honda has extended the new-car limited warranty powertrain coverage to 5 years/60,000 miles. It covers major engine and transmission components, except for standard maintenance items, body glass and interior.

Just to clarify that you're not yet out of warranty... But at the rate you're going, it won't be too long. If you're having problems, take it to a dealer.

As for the scanner, I've only used the Honda HDS, so I don't know about a 3rd party scanner.

I bought an Actron CP9135 from Amazon.com over a year ago. It works perfectly on new vehicles, including a 2007 Civic. Why wouldn't an OBDII compliant scanner not work on an OBDII auto?

What exactly are you doing to get it to try and link? Have you tried plugging it in, starting the car and then trying to link? Have you used it on other cars to confirm it works at all? We need more info to make sure you are using it correctly before we can suggest fixes. :)

With scanner off & car off, I connect to the OBD port on the car.

Turn the car's ignition to on, but don't start the car. Then turn on the scanner's power, and tell it to link.

It doesn't link.

Also tried it with that same procedure, except with the car running before trying to link.

Still didn't work.

Also tried a similar procedure with my '05 2500 Dodge Ram and the scanner didn't link there either (with the truck reporting "no bus" on the info display).

I took that one back and tried another with exactly the same results.

So at this point, I'm thinking the scanner isn't working or doesn't work with newer vehicles (despite supposedly being OBD II and CAN compliant, etc.)

Anyone have any recommendations for a scanner that definitely works on the '06 Civic that displays test descriptions of the codes? It'd also be nice if it could check monitor status, any realtime display of operating parameters, etc. Cheaper is better, but I have to have at least the text description of the codes. It'd also be nice if it supported manufacturer specific codes from Honda, GM, and Dodge (what I currently own) and could be updated.

Thanks!

Mark

Any OBD2 scanner should be able to read the codes as that is the reason they went to OBD2... to make them all able to read from the same interface. The OBD1 generations were pretty much manufacture specific.

Try taking the car to a Pep Boys or Checkers as I know they will read codes for free and see if they can get theirs to work on your car. If so, then the reader(s) you have is bad.

I have an Equus INNOVA 3100 and it has worked fine on a variety of vehicles, but I have not tried it on my 8th gen yet.
