Rough idle

So, I bought my 06 EX sedan MT just over a week ago, it has about 250 miles so far. Before I pulled off the dealer lot (with 4 miles or so on the odo), everything was great, seemed like I could barely tell the engine was running while idling (it was warmed up). However, after I drove ~10 miles home, I noticed a pronounced vibration while the engine is idling. It has gotten slightly worse since then. I can here sort of a "rumbling/clicking" sound coming from the tailpipe, and can feel the vibration anywhere on the car including the steering wheel and any body panel, especially of course on the engine itself (where there is also a pronounced clicking noise). Pushing the clutch in makes no difference, so I don't think it's a transmission issue, and the oil level is fine. It's not "teeth-rattling" vibration but definitely noticeable and annoying. The engine idles at just over 700 RPM. If I give it just a little gas, the vibration decreases, and I don't notice any particular noise/vibration/harshness when accelerating (though I haven't compared to another Civic- my only real reference point is my '95 Accord EX which I totalled a few weeks ago...).

Am I being too picky for an "economy" car? (Honda's web site touts "less noise and vibration" for the new 1.8L engine...) Should I wait until the 600 mile "break-in" period is up before I take it in? This is my first new car. Any advice is appreciated. I did several searches here and elsewhere and didn't find anything that sounded like this. Thanks in advance!

700 idle is pretty low... maybe thats why it's vibrating

it's uusally at 800~900... open up the hood and read where the normal idling range is.

I think the idle is okay for a MT. The clicking is the fuel injectors, mine does it too, and that's what the mechanic at Honda told me. I'm thinking of taking it to a different dealer to get another opinion. As for the rattling, I'm not usre, but I would take it in. Just make sure you can cause the noise to happen because if they can hear it, they won't do naything to fix it. Let us know if anything happens because I have the same concerns.

Thanks for the two useful replies. I thought about idle speed as well; if the shop manual was available from helminc.com I would already have it and look up what it's supposed to be. Didn't think to look for it under the hood somewhere, will check it out.

I have the same vibration at idle. Its really annoying actually. It was perfect the first couple of days with the car, then it started. Some days it gets really bad to the point where its worse than my 95 Civic with polyurethane motor mounts and bushings. I have 4600 miles on my LX sedan MT. It goes away when the idle is closer to 800rpm instead of the normal 750rpm it seems to be at. So, it seems to me that either the resonance at 750rpm with the rest of the car, etc is causing it or the idle should be raised a hair to 775-800rpm. When the car is still not completely warmed up, its perfect (as the cold idle drops, you can tell the point where it starts is between 750 and 775rpm). The 03-04 4-cyl Accords had this issue (TSB 04-024, I believe) on the AT models....the fix was to replace some mounts and add weight to the bumper (to account for the resonance). The dealer says "its a 4-cyl" but I've had many other 4-cyl cars (older, too) that didn't have so much vibration at idle. I'm sure they told the first batch of Accord owners the same thing. I will probably call Honda this week.

Try resetting the ECU...

open the fuse box cover inside your engine bay area
remove the "FI main" fuse
wait 5 minutes
put the fuse back
engine should relearn the maps and see if it cures the rough idle

Can you expand on this? "relearn the maps", is there some sort of learned logic behind the ECU?

Think of it as when you restart your computer. Sometimes the ECU just gets a weird signal and it gets all confused, like a desktop and needs to be restrted.

it's also a good idea to reset the ECU when you add an air intake or catback exhaust....

The stock ECU has limited capabilities, but it will still compensate a little for the free-er intake air flow and free-er exhaust....

Ok, I must've reset the ECU about 5 times already and the vibration is just driving me insane. Anyone else try this and not get (or get) results? Everytime I reset the ECU, its fine for a day, then back to the normal vibration. UGH.

I'm taking mine to my local service center Friday. It's incredibly annoying, and what's worse it's inconsistent. About 40% of the time it's fine, perfectly smooth idle, with or without the A/C on -- just what you'd expect from a new car (regardless that it's 4cyl). But other times, the vibration is bad. 650-700RPM for idle seems hardly acceptable. If I rev it to 750-850, smooth idle.

With my luck the dealer won't be able to replicate, or will be unwilling to do so.

Exactly the same with mine!!! They told me it was just a four cylinder, so you have to expect it won't be smooth...next time I take it, I'll call BS on that and tell them to get into a 7th gen or even an Accord 4-cyl and tell me if its the same.

didn't have a chance last friday after work; long week meant a night of drinking, and you know how it is trying to take your car to a dealership on a Saturday. Forget about getting it worked on.

However, I'm going to take it in Friday morning, so hopefully I'll have something to report Friday night.

Btw, are you using the same brand of gas consistently? I've tried switching to several different brands and running it for a couple of tanks, but it hasn't helped.
