Another Major repair

Took my car in today to check a coolent leak. Thought it was going to be something small cause a couple of months ago they replaced my water pump, and tension bolt when my car died. Service guy calls me and tells me that the coolent is comming from my long block(top part of engin??), and that hey are taking it apart to replace my short block(lower part of engin??), whatever the hell that means. Anyways, ive had the car less than 2 years and i already have hella problem with it. Might trade this in for an SI.

That really sucks! Also if those are the actual terms your service department is using you might want to check into another dealership. A long block describes and engine assembley that already has the head(s) installed basically ready to bolt in minus a few parts like manifolds etc. A short block is a term for a bare engine that needs all the parts from an old engine transfered onto it to run. What he most likely meant was it was leaking from the head meaning you probably have a blown head gasket. Either way I would get totally clear with these guys before you have them do anything. Good luck!

Eh, service advisor is dumb. Doesn't mean the tech is.

Short-block generally refers to the bottom end.....it includes the crank, rods and pistons. Bare block, is just the block.....with no internals. I've purchased a few "short-blocks" over the years.......I recently purchased a GM Performance Parts 383 "short-block" and it came with a crank, connecting rods and pistons.

Those were his exact words. When he called me they already started work. Service guy said they had to work on it and would not let me drive off in that condition.

Think if i give them some extra $$$ they would install an SI block??(I dont even know if this is possible or even if it makes sense, couldnt hurt though)

I want to say no. I never did major engine work on Honda's (VW GTI's and domestic V8's, yes), but I'm thinking that the non-SI heads would not mate up, maybe a different bolt patern on the trans, and Lord knows what else.
