When shifting out of P or R into D there is an audible click sound coming from the engine / tranny area. It's not very loud. You have to have the radio off to hear it and listen for it.
I guess it could be normal. The Click being associated with the tranny changing P/R gears to Drive. Just wondering if anyone else hears it? |

yeah, my 06 civic does it too. If you think that is bad, you should hear my truck. My old chevy farm truck used to sound like a battleship docking when you put it into gear.
But yeah, there is a faint click when you change gears in the new civic. |

Well, I could not get off from work today so I had my wife take the car to the dealership. They, basically, told her that this sound is "normal" for this car.
If anyone else hears anything different please let me know. Until then I will try to ignore it.

I have a similar problem. When I first start the car, the engine revs at around 1250 rpm. After "warming up" for 30 secs or so, I reverse it out of my driveway. The switch from P to R is not very pleasant. There is a loud click and a jerk. I brought it to the dealer and the mechanic there said this is normal since the engine rev is high, it will jerk. This does sound right b/c it doesnt jerk/click after I've driven it a bit and the engine is all warmed up.

I noticed this problem on my 1 week old sedan this morning for the first time. It wasn't there yesterday as I've been looking for all the small problems.
It's clutch engagement from P-D or R then a loud click. It's not normal for sure. Would other automatic drivers please check there cars as this could be a standad problem? |

Today, I went to Honda to ckeck out this gear problem and it seems to be on all the demo cars, too. The head technician told me it's nothing to worry about. It's just a slight gear miss Alignment when the gears engauge from P-D or R as in normal driving it's no problem.
He said if it gets worse to bring the car back for further investigation as it's not a small job to take the gearbox apart. |

I've got an lx coupe, and have heard nothing when engaging. Though, if it is very loud, these are brand new cars, first year models, take them back for god's sake! There's gonna be minor adjustments that need to be made. It's just a b1tch to deal w/ the dealer on them sometimes!

The click you guys are hearing I would say is normal.
What you are hearing is the tranny selecting the gear you have asked for its loud if the fluid is cold (more viscous) meaning starting after sitting all night or after parked for an extended period of time. You are also hearing it when the car is not moving very fast there for you are not distracted by road noise or traffic so it seems louder than it would if you were driving down the road. It could also be that the firewall in the car doesn't have a lot of sound deadening there for making the normal engine noises louder than if there was a lot of sound deadening on the fire wall. If you start hearing bangs as you are driving down the road and the tranny is shifting I would say something is wrong. I am a mechanic at a dealership although the dealership I work for isn't Honda but that would be my guess for what you are hearing hope this helps |

Mine Civic does the same thing. I've never heard this sort of noise come from any of the other Honda's I've owned. Maybe, a manufacturing flaw in the design of the tranny. I don't know, but I'll guess we'll have to wait and see if we have any problems with our trannys down the road. Remember, this is the first year of our car design, so may bugs will have to be worked out!

if the clicking noise is happening right before you put the car in rev or drive it is more than likely the shift interlock switch disengaging. everytime you put your foot on the brake with the car in park you will hear it. this is completely normal. if you hear it while the vehicle is shifting then it is more than likely what saberz said.

drove around a friends IS300 all day today and when it is cold the "P to R" engagement is a HUGE lurch... way more than my EX.... the IS300's have a click as well coming from the tranny, I think all these noises are normal and nothing to fret over. ohh and BMW X5's are just as bad with cold lurching... i have come to realize if expensive cars do it... then its OK :)

I've had this problem on my 06 Civic ex coupe two weeks after I bought the car. I have searched just about every forum regarding this problem.
As far as the late engagement of the tranny theory, I would hear the noise right after I press on the gas no matter how long I wait after I put it in the Drive. I feel the tranny engage as soon as I put it in the drive, but something else happens when I press on the gas pedal which creates this noise. It sounds more like a movement sound than engagement sound and yes it is bugging the s...t out of me. And yes you will hear a louder noise if your parked downhill, but that has nothing to do with the downhill load on the tranny. You will hear it without any loads on the tranny and it sounds a lot louder on downhills. I've been driving Auto transmission cars for over 26 years and I refuse to accept that this is a normal sound. |
