check gas cap message ?

Message check gas cap came up on me on my dash...I did let the fuel get pretty low with the low fuel light on, but check gas cap what is up with this?
I think it is now gone, I tried to reset it and see if it came back...maybe it meant check fuel?

NEVER take your car to a dealer for this. They will say they have to run ECU codes, all they do is tighten the cap and charge you like a $60 "diagnostic fee". lol
