I have read here it is caused by the fuel injectors, not sure why.

its not caused by the fuel injecors. its just the sound the fuel injectors make when pumping fuel. it doesnt seem like it should sound like that..but its normal...(if were talking about the same ticking here)

I knew it had to do with the fuel injectors, but was it odd that it completely stoped when I opened my gas cap? Could they make the noise because it more diffulcult to pull gas from a negative pressure system caused by a vacuum?

Anyway I think I am part way to a fix. I needed gas last night. I noticed when I got out of my car the ticking from the engine was very loud. I left my car running and once I opened the gas cap the ticking stopped immediately.

Could there be not enough ventilation from the gas tank that would cause a vacuum and affect the fuel injectors, thus causing the ticking?

Just thinking out loud.
there is supposed to be pressure in the tank air pressure that is......
there is also a return line that goes to the gastank and the injectors are supposed to make noise it is them opening and closing alot of pressure and high tension sping behind a valve will cause noise from them.......they open and close very fast....
My only answer to why the noise went somewhat away is you had a close to empty tank with alot of air pressure because you released the air pressure in the tank the back pressure on the return line was reduced........

I know, I know, I usually turn off my car, but the engine was cold and I wanted it to warm up a bit before I took it on the highway.

heh, w/ a warm engine = the fuel system is pressure regulated, so running your engine while opening the gas cap will mess with it for sure. i don't think it will mess up your fuel system since it's not open for very long, but who knows?

Opening a gas cap with the engine running can cause a CEL I don't advise doing so plus gas can in extreem cases splash at you....
Static electricity could ignite fumes too......

Episode 2: Cell Phone Destruction, Silicone Breasts, CD-ROM Shattering
In this episode, Jamie and Adam test several explosive theories. Can chatting on a cell phone while pumping gas cause the pump to blow up? Our mythbusters put themselves at risk so you don't have to. They also put silicone breast implants to the test at high altitude. Will they burst under pressure? Finally, we'll learn once and for all if high-speed CD-ROM players can really shatter a compact disc.

Cell Phone + Gas Station = Explosion? You have undoubtedly encountered a gas station (or more than one) that has a sign asking you not to use you cell phone because it may cause an explosion. Is that really the case? Can you blow up a gas station with your cell phone?

It seems unlikely, and after some investigation, it seems the most likely cause is probably a static discharge, because most of the gas station explosions come when people are getting into and out of their car.

After watching traffic at a station, women are six times are likely as men to get into their car while they are pumping. So Adam and Jamie set up a blast chamber using some women's underwear. The underwear is moved back and forth to create a spark in hopes that it will create a spark and ignite the gas fumes

It doesn't work, so they go back to the lab and experiment with some ratios, so they go back to the blast chamber and create a richer combination. Eventually they create a "longer spark" because the shorter one isn't working and eventually they get a big boom - but it's been pretty well determined that, even though the cell phone does generate heat, the phone ringer doesn't seem to spark long enough to ignite the fumes. Busted.

u guys know if u dont tighten ur gas cap enough it will set off a check engine light for evap system small leak detected? this also goes for ppl that fill up with the car running. if u didnt get a check engine light then consider urself lucky. dealer wants 1 hour labor to clear the cel so just be careful guys.
