CPU and Vtec questions.

Two quick questions. Not sure if this is a good spot or not. Oh well.

1) So often I find myself cruising around in fifth or so and I have the need for speed. I will drop the car in the lowest gear it can handle and take off. Sometimes this drops me straight into the high-cam profile (vtec). Is it bad to just jump into vtec?

2) I keep hearing the cpu learns from our driving habits. I am curious if I am "teaching" it bad habits. For example, getting on the interstate. I can get up to the speed limit easily in 3rd gear. Since I've already reached cruising speed I never saw a point in hitting 4th or 5th so I go from 3rd to 6th. I know this doesn't hurt the tranny but am I teaching my cpu something bad that might effect it's performance?

Everyone does those things. You are not hurting anything.

Honda claims that customers who skip 3rd and 4th, going to 5th or 6th are causing damage to the synchros, because shifting close ratio transmissions cause small changes in engine RPM. They calim it will cause premature wear and failure of the syncho rings. This was published in Honda Service News, January 2006

This will happened no matter what, if you change your gear they will wear. If you skip a couple of gears it will be fine.

Honda's claim is that they will wear prematurely.

Yea i do agree on the premature wear but if you rev match it should be fine, just throw it into N, take yer foot of the clutch, let the rpms drop to 2500 (or where you think the rpm would likely be in at 6th that speed) then put it into 6th

Just remember if you skip more than 1 gear you should rev-match.

With the rev-hang issue it's a relatively long wait to match rpms just going up through the gears sequentially. I really hate shifting with the rpms stuck higher than they should be... I think the rev-hang issue is causing premature wear on the clutch and transmission.

That said, if one is gentle on the transmission and watching the revs, I don't see how skipping gears occasionally is going to hurt anything.

It is a Honda and will take it. Sure if your easy, it will last even longer. If I wanted to go easy, I'd bought a VW Bug and put a fresh rose in its holder every day.
