DIY: Removing Anodization from Metal parts

I noticed there was no DIY on this so I figured I'd type one up.

So I bought some camber arms at IA off SLAMMDEnuff and they are anno'd blue.

My car is red and I don't want blue showing from the rear of my car so I was faced with a dilemma. Paint them and risk the blue showing when it chips or strip it.

I chose to strip it.

Anodizing doesn't come off with normal paint stripper. It is a dye embedded in an oxide layer IN the metal.

So, find you a suitable plastic container which will hold your parts
Then use OVEN CLEANER.

I've heard that any brand works but this was the first can I saw at Kroger. $5

Place parts in container and spray liberally.
This stuff makes some pretty sick fumes so either use it outside or put a lid on it like I did.

The can says don't get it on your skin so use caution and just wash it off it you do get it on you.

It should look like this after about 30min.
The bubbles lets you know it's working.

Let it sit for an hour or two.

Either put gloves on and remove the parts or just fill your container with water and drain. We are just trying to dilute the cleaner and rinse it all off of the parts.
After 45min

A quick rinse

I used a green scrubbie and got most of it off. Notice there is still some dark spots left.

I resprayed and they went back in the container to sit awhile

Left side: after getting it with a wire brush with the dremel
Right side: how it came out.

More pics after I'm done

Nope. Got em pretty cheap. That's why I got them even though blue.

I'm gonna put them on and get it close. Then I'll let Firestone deal with them.

Oh and don't leave It on for too long or the aluminum will come out pitted and crappy looking. Should sand and polish them for some bling

Will do. I've got the dremel charging up now to get a good polish on it. Planning to hit it with some clear when I get it done.
