Canister vent shut valve

My CEL on my 06 Civic EX came on. I took it to the dealer and they said the canister vent shut valve needed to be replaced. Does anyone know the function of the canister vent shut valve and whether or not it is a critical item. Thanks.

I think it has to do with the gas vapor recovery system so you don't pollute the air with gas fumes when you fill up. If not working it could caude the car to run poorly.
