To replace MTF or not to replace MTF! thats the question

Okay, my 2nd gear has been acting up on me. I also have the usual notchy
3rd. I believe i should replace my Manual Transmission Fluid to clear that problem up. Ive heard it does. So, i call the service dept. at my dealership to set up an appointment to replace the fluid. I told the servicer my problem, and also asked if there is a better MTF that honda has. He said it could be a possible problem that the fluid will not change. I am stuck on what i should do. I am thinking about replacing my MTF with Amsoil MTF. Comment and suggestions please.

just ask them for the gm synchromesh FRICTION MODIFED transmission fluid. theres a diy on how to replace it. it should take about a 1 1/2 quarts. so buy 2 quarts. beleive me it will solve the problem and make it even better than new.

I just called my dealer to talk about warranties, and asked if i put any non-approved MTF in the transmission the warranty WILL be voided. He also told me that changing my fluid i will just be wasting money because it wont fix anything, because supposably their all the same...

did you ask them what is and isn't approved? i highly doubt they would not approve amsoil syncromesh, redline mtf, motul mtf, penzoil, royal purple, etc. as they MEET or EXCEED manufacturer specfiications. now that they are the same? that is a joke. change it and find out for yourself.

btw did they also tell you that you have to use honda oil to keep your warranty too?

Yes, but i know the service guy i was talking to had no real idea what he was talking about. But, i will not be able to change my MTF myself. And, i need my warranty . I asked if i would be able to put GM synchromesh friction modified in it and told me it will void it. And, i believe if i said any other brand that wasnt honda he would say the same.

go to a local auto shop and ask them how much will they cahrge you to change the tranny fluid shouldnt be more than like $20 - 30. it will not void your warranty or cause any problems. gm uses the tranny fluid on their corvettes i doubt they would risk ruening such an expensive car.

Well, my dad bought the car. i have to respect him. He wants to keep the warranty. So, i have to make sure i keep the warranty at all costs. Im going to the dealership on monday to get my 1st oil change. I will try to talk to the most knowledgable service manager to see what my options are.

try another dealership that isn't filled with douche bags. they are complete morons. my dealer switched mine to amsoil syncromesh and had no problems. all the gears are silky smooth and no more 3rd notchyness.

I changed over to Amsoil Synchromesh 5W-30 Synthetic MTF and it makes a HUGE difference - much better shifts, much smoother, especially from 2nd to 3rd.

The Magnuson-Moss act of 1975 prevents, by law, dealers doing to consumers exactly what your dealer is telling you - it's against the law for any dealer to require that you use their parts in order to retain your warranty - provided that the aftermarket part meets or exceeds manufacturer specs - the Amsoil and any other good MTF meets or exceeds Honda specs. Amsoil has some pretty good information about this on their website and a letter that you could send to your dealer to "wake him up".
If the transmission were to have a problem, Honda would have to prove (on their dime) that the Amsoil, or whatever other fluid, caused the problem - that they would not be able to do.

The Amsoil WILL make a big difference in the gearbox.
