Front Plate Screwed

Has anyone noticed the front license plate holder uses a screw that goes directly into the front body work? The hole has to be hand drilled to accomodate the plate holder at the top. (The bottom part uses bolts that work with the chassis and produce no holes.)

In Texas it's mandatory to have a front plate but how about the buyers who are in states that don't require front plates and order from a state that does require them? You're going to either leave the plate holder on or have a nice hole in the center of the "bumper".

I still have the temp plate on the back and took off the front holder until I get the actual plates. My previous car didn't have front plates and I got away with it for 2 years here. I understand it's a $225 fine though. Maybe the hole is a sign to put the plate on, once I get them, and forget how nice the face looks without the plates on.

Actually just so you know, as of October this year, Texas no longer has the front plate law on. And cops wont stop you for that anyway.

But yes, i do agree it sucks, and i hate having those stupid ass holes, its ridiculous, so i guess i will just get some personalized plates, or get some body work done. I REFUSE to have a hole in my brand new car.

Really? That's awsome! Can you point me to a state site or reference? I haven't heard this. Luckily my dealer has not mounted my front plate holder.

I've been pulled over once and was giving a warning. Another time I was questioned about it at a checkpoint. But, of course, this was before October.

I have to see this new law in writing! If true, it makes my gripe more painful.

They want the front plate law to catch you at red light cameras. In Cali, anyway. Sucks.

I know this is true here in Nevada as well as a great deal of other states. You are only required to display a license on the front of your vehicle if it has the capacity to retain one (e.g. if there are holes, you have to put a plate on, if there isn't, you don't).

I just read a thing on California's website that there, you must have a plate on the front and rear of the vehicle, and it has to be externally affixed (can't put it on your dash, or in your rear window)

My brother bought his Scion xB in Newport beach and got it right off the truck. The dealer didn't have a chance to drill the bolt holes, so he doesn't have to have a plate up front.

I don't have a hole as you describe. I removed the front license plate holder as soon as I got the car and it was only attached by the two bottom screws, no hole in the bumper.

This is true but in most areas of California, they don't stop you for it. It seems like they only enforce the front plate law in areas of California where they heavily use the stop light cameras like in San Francisco. They ticket parked cars in SF for not having a front plate.

Thumbs up

I just put on my plates and didn't worry about it. As far as I know it's still the law and the $225 fine will be nothing compared to a DUI or possession charge which I'd likely be facing if pulled over.

Nope, I use my blinker, have good tags and plates, and all my lights are working. The only reason to pull me over is the smell of crack or swerving.

Actually, most vehicles do not come from the factory with those front hole drilled in them. They are drilled by the dealership when they get to the destination state. That way those states that don't require front plates don't haver nasty hole for nothing. Also, in states that do require front plates, a lot of times just putting the plate in the front windshield is acceptable if the bumper doesn't look like it was made to have a front plate put there. For instance, the corvette has a nose that come to a point and looks perfectly natural without a front plate on. This slides in some of the front plate required states because it doesn't look like there is a place to put the plate on the front. All states aren't that leanient though.

Wow, I hope you never hit and kill someone becuase that's what always happens when a drunk driver hits another vehicle. The innocent person dies and the drunk driver lives. In this instance I think policemen should shoot the drunk driver in the head on principle.

^ Yeah, they should shoot me in the head. That would be cool. duhhehehuh

I hope you only mean if there is a fatality and the drunk is unharmed. :) Otherwise I'd have a lot of dead friends after they got pulled over.

I told my dealer when i come to pick up my car if it has holes in the front bumper they can keep it. Needless to say, they skipped that step.I guess you gotta just tell them how it is.

You shouldn't have any holes in your bumper! If you do it's because the place where you bought your car has dumbasses working there.
The front plate attaches to the grill.
