You're right, but you only have to do the steps dentrecords posted once. It is that way from the factory because you then would have people complaining that their windows were fogging up!

Thanks. This is probably the cheapest performance modification around, too. I wonder if any 0-60 acceleration tests have been run by testers oblivious to the fact that the ac was running?

So before you guys do this step, you guys are not able to turn of the A/C after you press the defroster?

That is correct. Although the A/C light does not light up, the A/C is actually on, you can tell when the A/C is on by the sound of the cooling fan in the engine compartment.

I did this about 4 weeks ago and my gas mileage went from 22 - 23 mpg to 25 - 27 (31 all highway). This saves a lot of fuel - I don't like it when a car tells me how I should use it's features. Now, if I could get ALL of the doors to unlock when I stop instead of just the drivers door - his is a major PIA!!

By default the A/C does come on when you hit the defrost but you won't see the A/C light come on and then it stays on without you realizing it until you hear the A/C compressor running. The posted procedure allows you to see when the A/C is on and turn it off when you're using defrost.

It only makes a difference if you manually turn the A/C off (which you can only do with the steps I posted previously). I got 80 kilometres more to a tank of gas when I did that.

Has anyone figured out how to return to the default setting of AC on when in defrost mode? I have been reading about this for a while both here and on other forums but no one seems to know how to revert back to the factory setting should the need arise.

Edit:

I found instructions in a Honda Element forum explaining how to return to the factory setting. I have modified them to apply to the Civic. I have also tested them and it works!

HVAC.jpg

To deactivate automatic a/c feature:

1. Select dash vent button
2. Turn fan knob to off position.
3. Turn temperature knob all the way to coldest setting
4. Turn vehicle off.
5. Hold down both air re-circulation button and a/c button while starting the vehicle.
6. Continue holding for 7 seconds until air re-circulation button stops flashing.
7. Now when you select defrost mode the a/c compressor will turn on but so will the a/c light on the a/c button. You can now press the a/c button and turn the compressor on or off. Even when you turn the car off the setting will be stored.

To reactivate automatic a/c feature:

1. (Select defrost mode button)
2. Turn fan knob to off position.
3. Turn temperature knob all the way to the coldest setting.
4. Turn vehicle off.
5. Hold down both air re-circulation button and a/c button while starting the vehicle.
6. Continue holding for 7 seconds until air re-circulation button stops flashing.
7. After this, the a/c light will turn to green and it's back to factory setting!

So I was wondering...

If you are in a cold place like up north and you put the defroster on and the A/C kicks in, can't it freeze and cause damage?

Or is it just set to dehumidify and not cool?

Is this the same cause of my heat never going off even after I've shut it down?

there is a temp sensor that doesn't allow the AC to turn on in extreem cold situations.... also if the expansion valve is working correctly it will prevent freeze up...
