Unhappy Possible engine damage? (noob for a day)

Situation: I see a fully modded RSX-S on the freeway, who pulls up to check out my brand new SI sedan. He guns his engine and gives me the thumbs up so I can hear his exhaust.

Yours truely gets so excited by hearing another KA20 on the freeway, that I downshift from 6th (like a totaly ******* idiot) and put the car into 3rd instead of 5th, and get to enjoy the agony of the tach bouncing off the rev limiter.

All noob clowning aside (I'm way too old to pull a dipshit move like that)

1. My car has less than 1k miles on it, did I screw up my engine?

2. How can I tell if the motor is slightly jacked up

It seems to rev smoothly and idle fine.

Thanks

-Freq (wearing the dunce hat for the rest of the day)

What was the tach at when you were in 6th?

I think it's fine. If your motor was going to blow, it would've done it then.

A few questions...

What speed where you taveling at on the freeway (in 6th gear)?

If you went beyond the speed of what 3rd tops out at...then yes...you over-reved your engine which is now scrap metal.

If you only bounced a few times off the redline, no big deal. Probably no mechanical damage at all.

Next time, learn how to find the right gear before showing off. Let me see if I can find the video of that guy that let a some tard dyno tune his car and dropped the engine into the wrong gear...twice...ha ha ha.

This is for you...

Tell me about it, I'm way too old to be such a fucktard. I was in 6th doing about 65mph, so around 2800 on the tach. When I downshifted, it bounced off the rev limiter. If the engine was screwed up, would it just pop and blow like mis shifting on a dyno, or is there a chance I could have warped/bent something?

uhmm from what i've heard when you downshift your rev limiter doesnt come into play.

besides the rev limiter would kick in at like 8200 i think (only while upshifting though)

did your engine rev up past that?

I heard some ppl have messed up their engines at around 10,000 rpm cuz of valve piston contact.

He was probably trying to floor it and show off to the RSX...which is probably why he watched the engine bounce off redline.

Did something like this happen?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tx4wYE-0ubA

That right there is an over-rev. Engine damage ftw. Say to your engine.

pretty much exactly like that yeah, except that it bounced off the top of the tach a bunch of times.

Did that guys engine just completly go? How can I tell if mine is messed up?

Anyway...you probably did no damage.

If you can search to see what the max speed in 3rd gear is...I think you will find that you did not over rev your engine.

if you did downshift from 6th to 3rd @ 65mph you shouldn't have over-revved and should actually been in vtec. assuming that is what happened you should be safe and what probable happened was you were hitting the rev limiter. can someone confirm?

65 is nothing for 3rd. 3rd goes well past 75 atleast. You should have no problems what-so-ever. :)

either you were going above 80 or shifted into first (that must be hard to do) if it bounced off the top of the tach, or you imagined it in which case you are all set

Yea i think your right, 65mph in third is nothing. Now if he didn't engage in 3rd and had it floored that could eaisly explain the needle bouncing off the rev a bunch of times.

That should have been a perfect shift to put your car in Rape ModeŠ, also known as VTEC and fly by that poor RSX.

If you had blown it you would have found out right away. Loud pop followed by pieces of your engine randomly not working.

Id say you are well safe. Just go ride it around, radio off, listen for anything abnormal, if you are that worried. Or take it to the dealer for a run on the Diagnostic.
