I had this problem TWICE.

First time I brought it in, and they fixed it. I noticed that when I pulled the internal lever it was MUCH tighter before, leading me to believe that instead of replacing the cable, they just cut off the bad part and shortened it up to fix it.

It happened a second time, and they apologized because they had missed the fact that part of the unit itself was cutting into the cable, and over time it had actually severed the cable causing it to not work.

This also made me realize that it would be nice if you could fold down the back seats without having to access them from the trunk.

Anyway, just make sure they replace the whole unit...or ask them to check the unit to make sure that it wont happen for a second time.

Well opening the back seats from the inside of the car would defeat the purpose of locking out your trunk. Most car thieves arn't going to bother trying to pick your trunk lock, they'll smash you're window and take what's in there. Having not being openable from the inside keeps them from getting into your trunk.

Also my trunk had this problem as well, except reverse, it wouldn't close. There's a spring the moves the small black latch that hooks onto the thing in your bumper. Once it falls out it won't be able to latch it or unlatch it. Sounds like maybe it fell off while the trunk was still closed? It was just a simple matter of pulling off the black shroud on the closing mechanism and putting the spring back for me.
