Question About oil?

I know that this have been talked in other threads but this is an Venezuelan oil thread (tropical thread).

Yesterday i did my first oil change (5000 Km). I have some questions:

1) They used 5 liters of oil but in the manual said that with oil filter it would take 3.8 liters. How many liters a civic lx at (r18) use.
2) They use 5w-50 syntetic oil (i ask for 5w-30, but they told me that this was the oil grade for my city). Here in Maracaibo the lowest temp is 35 degrees celcius and the highest is 40 degrees. Do i have to flush the oil?

Thanks for all.

It takes whatever is stated in the manual. Excess oil can cause pressure on gasket, causing them to leak prematurely.

I think 5W50 is a bit on the thick side. Do they even make that grade range? Never seen it before. I would stick with 5w20 seeing how you are in colder climate.

I'm not cold weather. I'm talking about 35-40 Celcius not farenheit.

Opps... didn't see the unit on the temperature.

5w20, or 30 should be okay. 50 is a bit thick for the tolerance that Honda runs.

Anybody else.

You must have misunderstood them. I don't think they make a 5w-50 oil (at least not in the US). The most I would ever run would be 5w-30. If in fact they used something with that high of visco then I'd change the oil again ASAP!!! Your gas mileage will suffer greatly not to mention it possibly messing other things up. 50w is more like a turbo diesel oil. If I was you I would take it back and ask you speak with a manager or regional office, but thats stupid. They should follow what the manual says. And it takes 3.8qt with a filter change so I don't know why they put in 5qt of oil. Seems like got hosed big time!!!

I'm just reading the invoice, it said 5 liters of 5W50 syntetic oil. I dont think they actually put 5 liters because i just check the oil and is fine, but my concern is about the oil viscosity. if the temperature here is hot, would'nt be fine to use 5W50?

For those that speak spanish, heres a link from castrol: http://www.castrol.com/liveassets/bp...tds_mexico.pdf

Here's a link in english: http://www.castrol.com/castrol/gener...tentId=6006933

your car take 4 quarts of oil, they charged you for a extra quart.5w50 is a little to thick for you application, Honda recommends 5w20 your car.

it will not damage your car. But your gas milage and horsepower will suffer since you put thicker oil.

My first response is to use what the manual says. The engineers designed the motor and what needs to be run in it.

But if you had your oil changed at an authorized Honda Dealership I would contact Honda's Main Office (maybe send an email) and let them know your situation. If they say it's OK then your set. I would definitely keep my receipt.
