free oil change at the dealership

I know, someone had a post like this before, but i didnt pay attention to it. now im stuck in the same problem..haha. well, i had my first oil change yesterday and used my free oil change coupon they gave me. They put in 5w-20 in my Si and the manual says to use 5w-30..will anything in performance wise happen to my car? just wondering. Also, what is the difference? thanks.

they typed it into the receipt paper..i know it gets hella boring. They also have a refrigerator that claims to have bottled water for customers, but when i checked, none was in there. i only had to wait 30minutes though.

i belive 5w-20 is the standard they use for all civics, if not honda.
i asked the dealer if i could bring synthetic for them to use and he said "if you want you can, but we use 5w-20 and thats good enough"
although, that was a while back, my memory could be jogged

and it does get really boring... i wonder if they actually do what they say they do.

I never knew we could bring our own oil. Can we really bring in any oil we want and let them put it in?

My dealership did the same thing. I brough it back to them and complained. They told me it would be fine. I told them that the manual says 5W-30, They always use the manual as a bible if we haev questions. My dealership changed it and I watch the mechanic get the oil from the back room and watched him put it in. I would take it back and tell them you want the right oil. It seems petty but its the principle behind the matter

that might depend on the dealership...
but if you think about it, why not?
its your car, all they are doing is the work... so instead of them using their oil, they could just use the one you bring them.
although, i believe the price you pay INCLUDES the oil they use plus labour, and just cause you bring your own oil doesn't mean they'll lower the price.
but who knows, doesnt hurt to try!

You should have had it drained on the spot, then watched them fill it with the correct oil. then not have paid, left and never came back and called honda to report their stupidity.

lol you guys are making this bigger then it really is... the r18 engines should run fine with 5w-20. It's not like they're putting in turbo oil in your r18s.

If everyone really has a deal with what oil the dealers put in, bring your own.

If your civic ever breaks down you can sue them for putting in the wrong oil.

Correct, but the Si is 5w-30.

Our R18's use 5w-20

i think the OP has an Si though.

but yeah, then you gotta go through the sueing part, and then finding a new car... etc
although I wouldn't mind a brand new civic all over again haha

I don't know about the Si, but my 2001 Odyssey, 2002 CRv, 2007 Fit, & 2007Civic LX all recommended 5w20. I can't believe the Si is different, and I don't think it will make a "hill of beans" difference for one oil change. Just be clear what you want next time, or do it yourself.

That's the point, the OP has an Si, so he has a K20, not R18. The base Civics should use 5W-20, but the Si's manual specifically says to use 5W-30. That being the case, I would have demanded they drain and refill it with 5W-30 as soon as I noticed it. Even if it's just a performance hit and won't cause any damage to the car, they should be performing maintenance according to Honda's specs.

The techs that fill up your oil check the engine bay before putting the oil in. I spoke to the person that changed my oil at the dealership. He happened to be Honda nutt. The default oil is the 'wrong' oil for the Si. That is what is printed on the reciept, but the techs don't go by that, they go by whats under the hood.

I've seen the people that change your oils at honda. looks like they're my age or maybe 18, 19..look hella young..that's probably why. they just don't know the information for themselves.
