Oil residue under the oil pan

Noticed oil residue under the oil pan a few months ago with 3600 miles on my ex coupe. Took it in to the dealer. They cleaned all the tarish oil sweat from the bottom of the oil pan and said there was no leak. 800 miles later the residue is back. There is no sign of oil leak any where. Oil level is a bit low. Has any one experienced this?

I'm gonna guess either residual oil left over from an oil change being splashed all over when you drive it, or you have a leak (drain, filter...etc)

Yes Mat, I was just going to post something about it, Found residue of oil, and I don't think its from my oil change. I'll post some pics later on.

Is it right under the oil pan? Have you taken it to the dealer? If you have, what was their diagnosis? My dealer said there was no leak, which of course I don't believe a word they say any more. They have already cleaned up every thing about 800 miles ago and the residue has come back again.

Took it to my machanic and he said there is a hair crack in the oil pan. Now I got to go and explain it to the dealer and get them to change the oil pan. Does any body know if that is a very time consuming job?

How does one get a hairline crack in a metal oil pan?? I assume they are still metal?

Did you hit a speed bump or something??

If there is no visible sign of hitting something or scrapping up against something, it most likely is a defect.

I ran over a curb the other day and created a hairline leak. Took it to the dealer and said that its not underwarranty. I wonder if i can reverse the call since some people are finding the same problem without any accidents. Otherwise they are charging me roughly around 500 for a new oil pan. Man!!!
