R18 VTEC, how does it work?

someone in this forum said in a post that the R18's VTEC and the Si's VTEC work in different ways..

he said that for the R18's the VTEC works for gas mileage, which means it works in the lower RPM ranges (under 3500RPM) and anywhere past that its just normal power..

the SI's is apparently in the high RPM ranges.. which makes sense to me.. cuz i THOUGHT thats how VTEC works...

so whats the deal with the R18's VTEC? heck do they even HAVE VTEC?
this has been bugging me so id like to know if u guys dont mind

wow ... awesome info! thanks for posting

I think this part said alot:

So the 'i' in i-VTEC actually stands for 'intelligent' meaning a new generation of SOHC-VTEC which responds to actual road and running conditions, rather than the traditional one which works more or less mainly on engine rpms alone. VTEC on the R18A does not always engage - if the proper conditions are not reached, the engine might never enage VTEC at all

I had a first occasion to really put my r18 through the paces on hilly / congested partly open roads, and boy can this engine deliver when required, especially after 4k rpm.

Thank you! Read up on all of this awesome engineering and still amazes me!

I now have the "1.8L i-VTEC" video downloaded to my computer and have had to have watched it 20 times already!

(If anyone wants and can't wait for the thing to load on the original link, let me know and I can email or even host it in a 10.5MB Quicktime Movie)
