is the transmission damaged?

Hello everybody,
I did something really stupid. Yesterday, I was driving my Civic and I dropped my wife at a grocery shop, and I was waiting for her in front of the shop, after a while I turned off the car without putting the shifter in P(so the shifter was in D). When my wife came back, I turned on the car, and because the shifter was still in D, car suddenly jumped! I felt really bad ! Do you think anything bad happened to the transmission?

I am so stupid !!!
Thanks
Amir

Might wanna go get it looked at and figure out why you could start it in D. Most auto cars won't even let you turn it on...

But before that, I should make sure that this is not a common behavior among all civics. because if this is common, there is nothing the dealer can do about it. Is everybody sure that Civics will not start when the shifter is in D?

I'm pretty sure the civic can't start in D, it shouldn't even crank. Same went for my old accord.

mmmmmm...
I do not know why mine started. It is really strange. I know that you can not pull the key out if the shifter is in D. Maybe the reason is that I did not turn the key to the OFF position, I turned it to the accessories mode(I wanted to listen to radio). Maybe if you turn the key to the OFF while the shifter is in D then you will not be able to turn it back to ignition position. I will try this later today.

There should be an electrical lock out in any case when your transmission is in it's drive gears. Strange.

try starting it in each posistion and post results here. it could be the switch is misadjusted or shorted.

just take it back to the dealer since you have warranty.

Hey, it sounds more like you might not have turned the vehicle off. Actually, trying to move a vehicle with an electrical starter motor is not something that the starter was designed for. I would have a shop double check that (make sure that something wasn't forced out of place, or a damaged cog/tooth/engaging mechanism).
