Arrow CHECK THIS OUT - Honda service on a cracked block !!

2006 Civic Coupe 63,000 adult miles, all scheduled maintenance

On August 11th I could smell antifreeze, pulled over and determine the engine block had cracked and leaking coolant, filled with one half gallon of water and drove home. Found the crack(s) on the front of the motor behind the exhaust about 6 inches below the cylinder head. Put a half bottle of bars leak in which sealed 95% of the leaking coolant and drove to the dealership the next day. Car temperature gauge never indicated overheating and no check gauges light. Dealer says my extended drivetrain warranty will cover the replacement of the short block. This apparently is happening to a good number of model year 2006-2008 engine blocks and they were fully aware of the block casting issue. They send the head off to determine if there is any warpage due to overheating and TWO weeks later on 8/25 I finally get an answer that the head is warped and has 2 bad exhaust valves. At this time they finally order the shortblock, but not until then.

Monday 8/30 they call, car is ready and to come pick it up around noon, then call back about an hour later stating dont come because the car now wont restart and they need to figure out what is wrong. Service writer can't even tell me if it wont crank over, or just wont start and has now idea what the syptoms are.

8/31 Now they state I have a green sticky fuild in my fuel system and need to remove and TRY and clean the fuel tank and replace the Fuel Gauge Sending Unit, will cost $610.00 + tax but state they are unsure this will fix my car. My car has never had a single hiccup concerning fuel delivery and the fuel level gauge has worked flawlessly all the way down below empty. They indicate that a sample of this green fluid is settling to the bottom of a jar filled with gasoline. Now if this fluid has a specific gravity heavier than gasoline and settles below the gas then why didn't I have these fuel delivery problems before I delivered the car for service? They couldn't answer this question. Car had over a half tank of fuel when I delivered for service.

9/1 Cleaning out the fuel tank and replacing sending unit did not fix all problems. NOW I have a check engine light indicating the fuel EVAP system has problems and found the EVAP system is clogged with same green fluid.

9/3 Going on 4 weeks now and they call and indicate 3 additional EVAP parts and labor will now bring your total to over $1000 + tax. Now i must be a total idiot because I though the EVAP system was designed to keep proper air pressurization in the fuel tank and is not capable of circulating fuel throughout it's system as they are obviously indicating.

As stated above my car has never had any fuel system/gauge/EVAP problems or check engine light until they replaced the short block and this whole situation has me quite angered at the moment.

Can any Honda factory technicians chim in and tell me what they think is going on here. I call BS and I'm strongly considering calling Corporate Honda because the Service Manager has become non-responsive and the service writer and I obviously are at words with one another. Sorry for the long post, this is just a quick narrative of events, the conversations have been even more interesting.

My parents just received a letter form Honda stating that Honda will warranty the car for an additional 8 years, and repair/replace the block free of charge. (regarding their 06 LX) I would contact corporate, and throw a fit at the dealership.

Sounds like you need to contact HOA, and possibly talk to a lawyer just to see what else you should do.

They are not disputing replacing the short block, it's covered under the extended drivetrain warranty as stated above. Sorry if I indicated otherwise.

Green fluid is coolant.

There is no possible way coolant gets into the gas tank. Either someone poured coolant into your gas tank, which lead to fuel system failure, or they simply just BS'd you that there was coolant int he fuel system in the first place.

The factory Honda coolant is actually blue. They claim this unknown fluid to be green

Have you seen this unknown blue fluid yourself or are you just going on what the dealership is saying.

Isn't there some law or policy that if the dealer holds the car for more than 30 days that they have to issue a new one or something?

They're probably idiots over at that dealership. Contact a lawyer. How long have they had your car?

Find a lawyer that deals with this type of stuff and see what he/she has to say about it all. Call HOA and BBB too while you are at it.

If all else fails, stand out in front of the dealerships entrance, but not on there property. But somewhere visible for people coming to the dealership to see you. Make a sign, about how you are being screwed over, or simply "Would you like to hear my story regarding this dealership"

It sucks when dealerships start fcuking you around. The car worked fine when you brought it there minus the cracked block. So the car should have worked fine when they replaced the block if they didn't **** with it and probably purposely add new things to fix to try and make a few more bucks.

Can you get a sample of the so called green fluid and maybe have it tested yourself to see what it actually is.

It just really sucks when they start jerking you around, because they think they can scam you into buying more parts than is needed.

If you have a friend/buddy who is a mechanic get him to go into the dealership with you, to see if they will allow him to see where the green fluid was, and see what he has to say about it. DOnt tell the dealership that he is a mechanic though. Just ask if you can go back and take a look yourself and have your friend mechanic follow you.
