Battery terminal, corroding

The negative terminal of the battery is producing a blue/greenish substance. Can anyone tell me what is going on and how I should attempt to fix it, if at all. If I can do it myself, that would be wonderful. I know I can take it to the mech. but, you know, $$. Attachment shows what I'm talking about. Thanks!

clean it with some baking soda and water.

and dont put that anti corosion paint or whatever on the terminals. the reason why they are exposed is to attract corosion to that part of the cable. you wouldnt want the corrosion happening somewhere else on the line where it would be hard to get to.

I have used a wire brush before, see top right corner of the photo. It reformed. Perhaps this time after recleaning, I can add some lubricant. Thanks for that idea, I remember seeing battery terminal lubricant at the local auto parts.
